Orders for the bird seed are due by Sept. 16. "A variety of wild bird seed products in bulk will be available at substantial sav ings," said Jerry Paulson, Defend ers Executive Director. "This is an opportunity for the public to help feed the birds this winter and sup- p o r t d e f e n d e r s e d u c a t i o n programs." Prepaid orders will be taken by the McHenry County Defenders until Sept. 16. The seed will be picked up Oct. 5 at the Recycling Buy-Back location, 5005 Rt. 14in Crysral Lake. Several kinds of seed are avail a b l e , i n c l u d i n g b l a c k o i l a n d stripped sunflower seed, wildbird mix, cracked corn, and thistle (Niger )seed. Feeding wild birds in the winter is fun, and also helpful in supplement ing the wild birds diet. Wild Bird habitats and wild foods have been lost as the human population contin ues to grow, thus supplemental feed ing is useful in helping the birds through the winter. It is also fun to observe birds at a feeder. McHenry County Defenders is a non-profit environmental organiza tion founded in 1970 and isf primarily involved in recycling, local environ mental issues and educational prograriftningr^ For advice on how to get started feeding winter birds or to obtain a wild bird seed order form, contact the defenders at 459-0450.
