Page 10 McHENRY PLAINDEALER Section A Friday, September 6, IMS Sports On the Sideline Dick Rabbitt Soccer makes a nifty Soccer, the new kid on the block at McHenry High School, made a successful debut Tuesday, the Warriors defeating Antioch 4-3. For many years a solid youth program in the city, high school officials finally decided to add the sport to their program.; Coach John Sytsma, who in future years will hold the distinction of being the first Warrior soccer coach, had his squad primed for the visiting Sequoits from Antioch. Junior center-forward Ivan Cvitkovic led the offensive attack, scoring all four goals. Coach Sytsma was quite pleased the results, but had praise not only for Cvitkovic, but for goalie Matt Roy, defensemen Ron Murray, arid two freshmen Greg Grant and Perry Marke. We, along with all Warrior fans, extend our congratulations to the team on its superb beginning. Wer hope it grows by leaps and bounds in the future. Coach Joe Schlender's Fighting Warriors did everything but win last Friday night. They completely dominated the game, running and passing between the 20-yard lines, but were able to hit paydirt only once, midway through the opening period. Riverside-Brookfield managed a 90-yard drive late in the final period for the win. It is a rare occasion when a high school team can mount a drive that long without commiting a mistake, but the Bulldogs, with a 'little bit of luck/ did just that. Unless R-B improves a lot, their games with the other Fox Valley teams are not going to wind up in the win column. Friday night, the Warriors take on an old foe, some other Bulldogs from Grant, which lost to Ridgewood last week, and are rated, along with Marian Central as the team to beat in the Northwest Suburban Conference. / It's always a good game, and the Warriors, after dropping a 13-6 game last year in a downpour, will be looking to turn the tables tonight. With the first game now under their belts, I'm sure that Coach Joe had the team chomping at the pit to get at those Bulldogs. Mark Jinga, the signal-caller, showed some moxie, running for good yardage when not able to find a receiver. Fullback Dana Pitel rushed for 110 yards, which isn't a bad night's work. With some adjustments in the defense, we can expect McHenry to be fit and rady. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. Along with the soccer team, the girls' tennis team and the volleyball squad also won their openers Tuesday. Mike Shanahan will take his rwitational Saturday, -aoe race this season. girls' swimming team to the Fremd Invitational Saturday, and Hutch will take his Running Warriors to uie It looks as if the Fox Valley will be a dog-eat-dog Althpugh Woodstock and Central are tabbed as the teams to beat, it looks as if on any given day, any team can beat another. The only teams not seriously considered for the title are Cary-Grove and Dundee-Crown, but you can bet there'll be a few upsets before it's over. Five conference runners passed the 100-yard mark last week. Pitel, along with James Haywood of D-C, Jay Scime of Jacobs, Vince Hellem of Crystal Lake South and Bob Birdsell of Woodstock. Gaining 100 yards is a feat, and to have five players in the conference do it in one weekend is really an accomplishment. The Pepsi generation is still hanging in there after the first week of our head-to-head picks, and doesn't intend to fold this season. My worthy opponent wandered into the wild blue yonder with Lake Zurich over Jacobs last week, and got shot down. RabMtt: (7-3 on the season) This week we'll stick with the Warriors over Grant. They want to atone for last week's defeat. The Hurricanes to bounce back and take Harvard easily. Johnsburg to win its first for Mike Roberts over Nazareth Academy of LaGrange. Crystal Lake South, after a big win over Marian, to continue on its way over Lake Park. Central to bounce back and whip West Chicago. Dundee-Crown to win over Round Lake, Jacobs over Wauconda, Lake Zurich to beat Cary, Richmond over Kirkland-Hiawatha and Woodstock over Carmel. Juzwlk: (6-4 on the season) One game does not a season make, my friend. Your picks this week are perfect. Except for one. Dundee-Crown has about as much chance of beating Round Lake,as you do of beating me in these picks. So, after this week, we're tied. And after next week, you start to go down, down, down... Fall Softball League Mc Specialties 5, Huckleberry Inn 2 McHenry Specialties took the lead for good with a two-run fifth en route to a 5-2 win over Huckleberry Inn. Phil Schmitt doubled and scored twice, Gary Freund had a hit and a sacrifice, Dave Bauer drove in two runs, and Dave D'Angelo had two hits. Fruend also added a spectacu lar catch in left centerfield, making a circus "Willie Mays" grab. Huckleberry Inn had the bases loaded and two out in the seventh THE TIME IS NOW... The Warrior kickers, after open ing their inaugural season Tuesday with a 4-3 win over Antioch, were rudely brought back to reality, los- when a grounder went off pitcher D'Angelo's mitt right to shortstop Jeff Majors, who stepped on second for the out to end the game. It was the first game of the season for both squads. Back Door 4, Ace Hardware 3 Randy Gray, Terry Hovseth, Mike Riley had two hits apiece to lead Back Door Tavern past Ace Hard ware, 4-3. PJHS camp winners Parkland photo Parkland Junior High School held its first-ever summer boys and girls basketball camp this year. JAuSI/a£m ing to Elgin 9-0 Wednesday, and Zion-Benton 5-0 Thursday. McHenry will host Crystal Lake South in the Fox Valley Conference opener at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. At Zion Thursday, the Warriors lost a very physical game, 5-0 to the Zee-Bees. "We played very well, really," said McHenry coach John Sytsma. "We were only down 1-0 at the half, and that goal was put in inadvertent ly by one of our guys. After three quarters, it was still only 2-0. "We tried to come back by pulling some defenders, and they scored three more. But we played good socccr for three quarters. This was our third game in three days, and the kids aren't really used to it, this being the first year and all. We have some aches and bruises. Zion is 3-0 now." " , On the bright side, goalie Matt Roy made 28 saves, a number of which Sytsma called "brilliant." "He was just fantastic. We came out too tenta tive, and were down 5-0 after one quarter, playing real defensively. ; The Warrior coach cited the play; of Jerry Bennett and Joel Harris as the two bright spots in the loss.
