Sports Gone Flshin' By Bruce Szatek First Mate, Glna Joy Charters Low water level makes for very slow fishing After doing some spot checks with local'fishermen along the Fox River from the dam site downstream to the Dundee area, I have found fishing to be gener ally on the slow side. The biggest factor for this situation being the low water level in the Fox River. Being a believer in structure fishing for many years, maybe I can pass on to you a few tips whidh may help you land a few fish, when conditions such as low water exist in a river (as in this case) or lake. One important point to consid er is the migration route, the path fish use as highway up or down the river, almost always the deepest area of the river. You can usually locate these routes by looking at the structure of the river banks, the side with the deepest incline, and with the swifter current usually leads to the deepest water and channel. Here is your highway. Fish it with your bait on or just above the bottom using just enough weight to keep the bait down, depending on the swiftness of the water. In the early a.m. or p.m., when the fish leave their high way to feed, fish the shoreline or shallows with artificial or live bait, using a slow to moderate retrieve. Another area where structural fishing comes into play is on on or around river islands. The downstream side of an island, where the water that is separat ed by the island comes together again, is also another likely area to find game fish. Try to cast into the water, just beyond the calm water, into the yoke. Also look lor overturned, or overhanging trees, and stumps, again fishing file downstream side of them, just past the calm water. This past Saturday stripers were hitting slow to good depend ing on where you were fishing. One man had landedthree nice stripers as I was tattling to him, using a green yummy with a bobber about 24 inches above it. Place your bobber according to the depth of the water, with the lure just above the bottom, using * a slow to moderate retrieve. J Good luck and good fishing! il pounds FHT for 12" title McHENRY - Rusty Nail Inn capped a superb season with two wins Wednesday night, capturing the championship of the McHenry Men's 12-inch Softball League, three games to one over Fox Hole Tap. The two teams split the series' first two games, but the Nail left no doubt as to who the champion would be, when they scored seven in the first inning and cruised to a 25-0 beating. The Nail banged out 27 hits in the contest, while Fox Hole could muster just seven, committing five errors along the way. The Nail capped things off with a 10-run sixth. Fox Hole employed a three-man outfield throughout the series, and „ didn't stray from that strategy Wednesday. It didn't work. The 25-0 thrashing was the most lopsided win in playoff series history. John Me^rs led the way for Rusty Nail in game three with three hits, three runs scored and four RBI. Rick Wakitsch added three hits, as did Chuck Marke, Ray Thelen and Don Bentz. Marke collected three RBI. Doug Freund, Dave Sundby, Bill Meyers and Joe Meyers each had a pair of hits. Seven of the Nail's 27 hits went for extra bases, includ ing a double and a triple apiece by John Meyers and Marke. Freund blasted a two-run inside-the-park homer in the sixth. Fox Hole rebounded and played solid in game four, as they faced extinction. In the top of the first after two outs, including a great running catch by Jim Yaworski to rob Freund of extra bases, Wakitsch readied on a throwing error. Bill Meyers doubled him home, and Bentz singled in Meyers to stake the Nail to a 2-0 lead. Jeff Meyers led off the Fox Hole first with a single, but Wayne Hiller hit into a 5-4-3 double play. Rich Meyers then doubled, Mark Vogt drove him in with a single, and Mike Peterson blasted an RBI triple, but was cut down at the plate, Randy Theil to Marke to Bentz. Doug Freund made a brilliant catch of a long fly by Vinnie Freund in the Fox Hole second, but the play scored Yaworski, giving Fox Hole a 3-2 lead. That lead became 7-2 when FHT tallied four in the third, when Rich Meyers hit an RBi double, Pe terson drove in a pair with another triple, and Yaworski singled him in. The lead was short-lived, howev er, as Thiel, John Corinell and Marke allhad RBI singles in the fourth, John Meyers blasted a two- run triple and Freund drove in a run to make it 8-7, Nail, a t a m p s w o u l d n ' t k The lead bulged to five when Con- \ nell, Ray Thelen, John Meyers and Freund added RBI singles in the fifth. OSS One of the strangest things that ever happened in baseball was when a batter hit a fly ball that NEVER CAME D0WNL.lt happened at the indoor Minneapolis Metro- dome on May 4, 1984 when Dave Kingman of Oakland hit a high fly ball that got caught in the netting of the fabric ceiling of the dome...The ball stuck there and didn't come down...The umpires decided it was a ground rule double. ^ Incredibly, a team in the National Foot ball League once played a whole game without gaining ANY yardage!...Seattle, in a game against the Rams in J979, had an official total of MINUS 7 yards rushing and passing for the entire day...Unbelievable, but true. ••• I bet you didn't know...that whatever your needs may be, McHenry State Bank's Loan Department can help.
