"I have six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The third will be here in December. I enjoy them very much. But I don't think any of them will send me anything. I don't know, they may fool me. They al ways send presents on birthday and Christmas," Randolph added with a laugh. ; - • --h : "Sure, I enjoy it," said Evelyn Qellins, who has^even grandchil dren between the ages of 17 and 28. "I usually get to see them. Some times, I get a call." Collins, 72, has worked six years for the McHenry County Senior Citi zens' Council. She sees her peers every day and knows Sunday isn't the only day people can honor their grandparents. "A lot of times, though, and this is only my own feeling, a lot of times it doesn't have to be a special day. It's nice to remind people about it, but it's even nicer to be remembered during in-between times. "Sometimes it's just a mattef of a 'touch-me' thing. Sometinfies I get a surprise visit when I poi# *now be there's cookies here for them times there aren't." the baby together," she added. "I love my children." Jody Erangey, administrator of Fair Oaks, said, "Most families come in here and visit on a routine basis. A lot of families come in and out." they'd be coming. Onetimes \hat sort of th>n8- The Fair Oaks Nursing Home was quiet Thursday afternoon. A preacher was speaking to a gather ing of residents in a large meeting room. In the Fair Oaks beauty shop, Helen Campo was having her snow- white hair done. . "I've got nine of them, the youn gest last July 4th. I'm a great- grandmother," she said proudly. "I see them all the time, all the time. "Oh, yes, they'll come here. Last time they took a picture of me and Lois Emmert was tending the counter at the Carousel Snack Bar in Crystal Point ^Wall. Mfer grand parents have passed away, but She herself has four grandchildren, ages 2 to 7. She doubts any surprises are awaiting her Sunday. "No, because I never get any-' thing." she laughed. "I think it's neat, but it's not like the old days. You look like you're too young to remember this, but on Mothers Day, women would wear red flowers if their mothers were alive and white if they were dead. You never see that anymore, but I think it'd be neat," Emmert added, c . » * * » People like Collins sometimes find themselves in an emotional bind. "There are a lot of lonely grand parents, I know that. We're not funded to do that much and we're always looking for volunteers to do ^other-^ our Community Cares Peo ple, they're the most needy. They need companionship. Once a month we meet with them, but a lot of times that's not enough. They need someone to read to them, write, go through the mail for them. We can always use volunteers," Collins said. Mark Gordon is a clerk for Or ange's Records and Tapes in Crys tal Point Mall. He won't be observ ing Grandparents Day since his are no longer alive. "I don't think the family institution is as strong as it once was. Without that, you can't identify with your grandparents." * * * » Judy Matuczak thinks, she'll be one of those "lonely grandmothers" Sunday. "Probably, I probably will be. Of course, I'm relatively new to the business -- the baby is only 9- njonths-old," she said. "My kids live in Kansas. Maybe with all the publicity it's getting lately, maybe they will think of it. ' "There are seniors who aren't Continued from Page 1A because they never iere parents. Some people will for get, just like on Mothers Day. It's a little discouraging, but it depends on the person. Some get real inun dated by disappointment and for some it's no big deal." said Matuc zak, who's in her third year as di rector of the McHenry County Se- 'nior Citizens' Center. The day's newness hasn't helped, and there is room for improvement. "It's not like Mothers Day when you can't get a (phone) line in the U.S. It's the key day of the year," she said. "That's one of the nicest remem brances when they call you. That's one of the neatest." As of August 1st...
