Plan dinner, dance The highlight of the social calen­ dar of the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce is the annual fall Din­ ner-Dance. Chairman Judy Mazrin announces the dance will be Sept. 28 at the Apple Tree Restaurant at Holiday Park in Ingleside. The evening begins with cocktails at 6 p.m. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. and will offer a choice of shrimp or beef entree. Choices must be made at time of reservation. Res­ ervations can be made by calling 385-4300. Dancing will begin at 9 p.m. and continue until midnight to the music of McHenry's favorite dance band, "Trilogy". The Annual Dinner-Dance is a cel­ ebration of the year's intensive pro­ gram of activities and projects. It is held annually just prior to the corpo­ ration's annual meeting, which this •year will occur on Oct. 8, after 7 " p.m. at the city council chambers, city hall. It is during the annual . eeting that awards for outstanding achievement are presented to mem­ bers of the community. The Dinner-Dance is designed to be a purely social aspect of that annual endeavor. All members of the McHenry Area Chamber of Com­ merce are welcome to bring pro­ spective members and/or business guests for an evening of enjoying good friendships, good food, and good music. Benefit concert Folksinger Jim Post will perform at a benefit night for the McHenry County Defenders, at the Woodstock Opera House, Saturday, Sept. 21, beginning at 8:15 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the Wood­ stock Opera House Ticket Office, 338-5300; and the Defenders' office, 459-0450 for $9. and $11. large amount in interest and spread the indebtedness over a period of 20 years. The city council Sept. 9 adopted an ordinance for the issuance of $30,000 in funding bonds. The bonds will eliminate the floating debt which has been necessary for the past sev­ en or eight years, partly due to slow tax collections because of the de­ pression years and the fact that the indebtedness carried an interest rate of six percent. Despite these handicaps, the city has been able to reduce the debt materially. The bonds carry a four percent Interest rate. A seven-piece dessert set, "Beau­ tiful Crystal green glass with fancy molded handle and six 4-and-a-half inch nappys to match" was the spe­ cial this week for 23 cents "while they last" at William H. Althoff Hardware. FORTY YEARS AOO (Taken from the files of Sept. 13, 1945) The Ringwood Sunshine Girls and Happy Clover Club 4-H girls will preside next Sunday at the dedica­ tion of the Ringwood Honor Roll, which they built as a club project. The money was raised by the girls from the scrap drives held over a long period of time and represents the boys and girls from that commu­ nity who are serving their country. Hi ' Display artwork The Clayworkers Guild of Illinois Annual Travel­ ing Exhibit of Contemporary and Traditional Pottery will be on. display at the McHenry Public Library during the month of September. The guild is a not-for-profit organization with mem­ bership including professional and part-time day artists. Elsie Regner has been at the Chelsea Naval Hospital in Massa­ chusetts for the past three months where she has been in charge of a department containing 437 patients who have returned from overseas. She is currently visiting McHenry on her way to Okinawa. The U.S. Army University Center in England, designed to give soldiers a chance to get college instruction while waiting to return to the United States, has started its first semester at Shrivenham with an enrollment of 3,611 students, including Cpl. Henry A. Reese, 30, of McHenry. Cars lining the highway east of Woodstock brought many to the first-time flight instruction, airplane rentals and passenger rides avail­ able to the public. Instructors from Waukegan were In charge. If the demand is sufficient, this service will continue in the future on a two- day-a-week basis. TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 15, 1960) Gov. William G. Stratum present­ ed a state flag to the Viscounts Drum and Bugle Corps at Lakeland Park Tuesday when he visited the local community on his 18-stop heli­ copter tour of the county. Capt. A1 Phannenstill presided at the meeting of Co. 1 of the McHenry Fire Protection District held this week, when it was announced that representatives of the three local stations would be sent to attend the special fire school in Monroe, Wis. The Mental Health Center for Mc­ Henry County on Waukegan Road in McHenry has treated 31 patients during the past month, after only having opened a few months ago. The McHenry Plan Commission presented'a progress report at their Monday evening meeting. A discus­ sion of the proposed McHenry indus­ trial park took place concluding that the role of the industrial committee will be to recommend street widths, available parking and types of build­ ings to be constructed among other tasks. The McHenry Chamber of Com­ merce surveyed the area to find out the need for a shopper's bus service. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 10, 1975) - As part of the Illinois Environ­ mental Protection Agency's acceler­ ated sewage system construction grant program, the agency recently offered $7,500 to the Village of Lake- moor to prepare a facility plan. La- kemoor accepted the grant. A referendum is now required be­ fore the project can be undertaken with tax money. The total eligible cost of this project is estimated to be $10,000. Based on this figure, Lake- moor will provide 25 percent, or $2,500, according to the director of the Illinois EPA. The McHenry County Zoning Board of Appeals hearing regarding a proposed gravel pit on Chapel Hill Road last week was continued to Sept. 24. This will be the eighth hearing before the board in connec tion with a petition by Leo and Eve­ lyn Diedrich and Material Service Corporation, who are seeking a con ditional use permit to mine and pro cess gravel on 121 acres of land on the east side of Chapel Hill Road, about .75 miles north of Lincoln Road. Much of the hearing last Thursday was devoted to legal wrangling between Attorney James Bishop representing the petitioners and Attorney Bernard Narusis rep­ resenting the City of McHenry as objectors.
