Mov ing at a snail's pace, it sprays little jets of wa ter as it goes. Next door, tiny rods mysteriously appear from the earth at the same time each day, computer-program med to spurt, drip and soak wet relief onto the thirsty landscape. And the guy down the block has sprinklers that ac tually get taller as the shrubs they're watering grow. .Ii it's been 10 years or more since you bought your last sprinkler, you might be surprised at the various above- and in-ground watering sys tems now available, let alone the electronic gadgetry accompany ing them. Sprinklers today in clude traditional man ual watering devices and newer automatic in-ground watering sys tems, said Don Cooper, a spokesman for Weath- er-matic, a Dallas- based home lawn-care corporation. Which kind of water ing system to buy de pends on the size of your lawn, its land scape and how much you want to spend. The familiar oscillating fan sprinkler - the kind children love to dodge through and adults try to avoid -- can cost as little as $6.99; a fully automatic system can average $1,000 to $3,000 for a 20-by-60-foot lawn. "Both do the job if .they're designed right. But knowing the right sprinklers to get the right irrigatfon is im portant," Cooper said. For example, shrubs and flower beds don't take the same tyjje or volume of watering as grass, and flat lawns re quire different \fatering systems than hilly lawns. And at a time when several states are fining homeowners as much as $500 for sprin kling water onto the sidewalk or street, wa ter waste is a concern, Cooper said An average home owner can buy an auto matic watering system -- which should pay for itself in five years through water savings, Cooper claimed -- and install it himself for as little as $200. "Twenty years ago an automatic sprinkler system was a thing of the rich. Today, the prices have come in line so that the average person can afford it." The advantages of an automatic system are many. If your yard is on a hill, an automatic sys tem can be designed to shut off regularly to prevent water fall-off. Different kinds of sprin klers -- from sotfker hoses for flower beds, to spray systems that pop out of the ground for watering' grass -- can be installed according to a particular lawn's layout. And programa- ble timers will turn sprinklers on at the crack of dawn (the best time to water). Finally, a good automatic sys tem will last the life of a house. But this last advan tage may also be a good reason not to buy an in- ground system, said John Ricci of Agway of Johnston. For a home owner who won't stay in the same house for 20 years, the difference between a $7 rotary sprinkler and a $200 to $3,000 in-groufid system may be great enough to discourage an invest ment in automatic sprinklers. "The portable models are much, much less expensive," he said. "For the average indi vidual with a small backyard, (an automat ic system) just might not be worth it." Ricci sells only above-ground portable sprinklers: hoses, three-arm rotary mod els, pulsating sprinklers that spit water, and the like. While portable sprinklers mean dodg ing water jets and deal ing with cumbersome hoses, they don't entail the advance planning, yard-digging and ex pense of automatic sprinklers, he said. But like the in-ground indus try, modern technology also has infiltrated the portable sprinkler market. One model, called the Rain Train or the Trav- el-Matic, is so portable that it moves -- seem ingly of its own will -- across the lawn, spray ing water as it reels it self by a hose toward the house.^ Boasting a watering radius of 13,000 square feet in one from the sun, and to have a dry lawn-at night to avoid garden diseases, Ross said. He suggested watering grass,(flowers and young shrubs and trees about one inch per week, but the best way to check watering levels is to "sit down on the lawn every once in a while and see how moist it is. It's not very scien tific, but it works." watering, it also boasts the most expensive above-ground sprinkler price: about $60. It is most practical in yards with large, flat, open expanses. Regardless of the kind of sprinkler sys tem you buy, certain watering rules of thumb should be observed, said Dave Ross, an ag ricultural engineer at the University of Maryland. The report was sur prisingly strong be cause the bureau re v i s e d s a l e s f i g u r e s upward sharply for the last several months. June, a month in which sales originally were re ported down slightly, actually saw a 2.2 per cent improvement. Builders did better than first reported in April, May and June so that July's new house sales were running at a n a n n u a l r a t e o f 704,000, after seasonal adjustment. If that rate is sus tained for the rest of the year 1985 will end up with new house sales more than 10 percent higher than last year. The sales improve ment in July took place despite a $3,300 In crease in the average cost of a new house dur- i n g t h e m o n t h , t o $101,900. That is still un der the record average in April of $104,700.
