McHENRY PLAINDEALER Section A Friday. September 13. IWPageM Sports On the Sideline Dick Rabbitt Warrior golfers dumped by Woodstock, 171-178 'pretty good' against CLS With two straight losses to non-conference opponents -- Riverside- Brookfield and Grant -- the Warriors will open Fox Valley Conference competition at Crystal Lake South Saturday, the varsity game slated to begin at2 p.m. The Warriors will find that the competition doesn't get any easier, and will have to have a super effort to knock off the 1-1 Gators, who defeated Marian Central and lost to Lake Park. * In last week's loss to the Bulldogs from Grant, the Warriors once again played a pretty good football game, but playing 'pretty good,' and losing doesn't make the fans, coaches or players very happy. The Warriors as a team will have to concentrate on the task before them. At times they appeared a little disorganized, the play calling will have to be improved, and the defense will really have to toughen up on third down and long. ** However, there were some bright spots in the Warrior attack. Dana Pitel went over the 100-yard mark in rushing for the second straight time, and Mike Schultz again made some remarkable catches on the receiving end of Mark Jinga's pases. His catch near the goal line which was called back on a penalty would have put Willie Gault to shame. With St.Edward of Elgin the only remaining non-conference foe, the Warriors have a formidable task ahead of them if they wish to reach the state playoffs. Coach John Sytsma's soccer team has run into a bit of hard luck after their season-opening victory. They were shut out for the third straight game, as the Gators 6f South won the FVC opener, 4-0. To Coach Sytsma and his squad, better times are ahead. Just have a little patience. All new sports have the same problem. Remember: it takes time to build a program. After winning their first two games in several years, the McHenry High girls' volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season to Cary- Grove, 15-9,15-9 Tuesday. With the addition of a freshman team this fall -- which by the way won over Cary-Grove -- the program should show great improvement in the future. In order to be competitive on the varsity level in the Fox Valley, a school must have three levels in any sport. Football and basketball compete on six levels. Gary Gray's girls' tennis team is off to a roaring start with a 4-0 record, Elgin being the latest victim, 3-2 on Wednesday. The veteran coach is looking forward to a successful conference season. Coach Mike Shanahan's girls' swimming team lost to Waukegan West Tuesday, 94-74. Sophomore Tracey Hoffman again set two school record in the 50 yd. freestyle, which she finished in 26.29, and in the 100 yd. freestyle, with a time of 57.8. See all the results in today's edition. The new Illinois High School Association playoff scheme is getting a lot of attention. I have received calls from Rockford and Peoria regarding the play of the FVC schools. It has become quite evident that schools around the state are looking into the play of schools in their same class, and at the present, only Woodstock and Jacobs are undefeated in the league. But, it's still seven weeks until playoff time. Well, it's that time again, and, according to my records, I'm two up on the other guy. Experience is so important, I keep telling you. Something about Mm bothers me, though. I wbnifer lf sbmeobe isn't sniffing too much printer's ink around the newsroom. Anyway, this week should be a cakewalk even for our beloved opponent. We should both pick the same teams unless he goes totally off the deep end, which is always a possibility. Rabbitt: (13-7 on the season) South to take the Warriors. I'll pick McHenry's opponent until they show me they can win. Woodstock over a patsy, Schurz of Chicago. The Warriors should schedule a Chicago opponent. Jacobs, the surprise thus far, to beat Dundee-Crown. Central to roll easily over Cary-Grove. Mike Roberts to win his first as Johnsburg coach over Wauconda. Marian Central to rebound and beat Grayslake, while the Rockets from Rich mond take Harvard. Juzwik: (11-9 on the season) Boy, a two game lead can really go to some people's heads. Yes, it's as if someone put a mirror between our selections this week, I go with all the same choices. McHenry will give South a good game, while Grayslake and Harvard will prove feisty opponents. I'll catch up to the wascal. I could have spotted him five games and still caught up. Worried? Hah! By Plaindealer sports staff WOODSTOCK -- McHenry's golf squad lost its Fox Valley Conference pener to Woodstock at Crystal Woods Golf Club Thursday, 171-178. "We've got a young team," said MCHS coach Charlie Cuda. They're all sophomores, for the most part, they may come through et." Sophomore Brian Franks and ju nior Chris Howertsen led the way for the Warriors with 43's, but both were outdone for medalist honors by Woodstock's Dan Nillen, who fired a 38 after four-putting the first green. Scott Miller and Phil Webb came in with 46's for the Warriors, who will next participate in the Dundee- Crown Invitational Saturday. McHenry fell to a rugged Wauke gan West squad, 92-72 at West Cam pus. The MCHS JV squad won 79-64. / "We had an excellent start, al though we lost. Those were the words of Marian Central tennis coach Tom Burg after he watched his Hurricanes drop a 5- 0 decision to Grant in a Northwest Suburban Conference meet Wednes day afternoon at the Marian courts. Marian, now 0-4 on the season, will travel to Marengo Monday for an other NWSC battle with the Indiaifs. ' Noel Mercure lost a tough match at first singles as Grant's Jennifer Spencer hung a 6-4, 7-5 defeat on Marian's No. 1 player. "It be came a test of patience." . At No. 2, Michelle Martino lost a tough three-set match. She lost the first set, 4-6, but rallied to win the second, 6-1. In the final set, Martino managed to tie the score at 4, but Sayles won the last two games to take the match. "In the fifth game, Michelle jusf\ couldn't get the points to get her over the hump," Burg noted. Cheri Caley dropped Marian's Beth Hattas at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-3 Hattas, later in the afternoon, won an exhibition match. At first doubles, Balinda Taylor and Julia Kurh throttled Traci Mar tino add Jenni Will, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4 in the tiebreaker) and at No. 2, Marian was forced to forfeit due to injury problems.
