Mathew Robert Holmes, 18, who lives with his family in Caracas, Venezuela, was the principal source for cocaine brought onto the campus of exclusive Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford, U.S. Attorney Alan H. Nevas said. "We intend to bring felony charges against Mr. Holmes some time next month," Nevas said. "We have been in contact with an attor ney for the family." Two more former students, Rob ert Levine, 19, of New York, and Stephen Russell, 19, of Fairfield, pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court in New Haven and Bridgeport to charges they aided and abetted in a scheme to import cocaine from Venezuela. Ten former students pleaded guilty Wednesday to federal charges of helping finance the scheme. The two charged with smuggling the drug, Derek Oatis of Meriden and Catherine Cowan of Little Rock, Ark., are due to appear in federal court in Bridgeport Sept. 26, along with the 15th former student impli cated so far. Authorities say more arrests are expected as they have learned the identities of other students who con tributed to the $4,800 bankroll Oatis and Cowan used to buy about 300 grams of cocaine in April 1984. Nevas said Holmes, on six sepa rate trips home for vacation be tween 1982 and 1984. brought cocaine from Venezuela back to Choate, where some was sold to classmates. Holmes ̂ did not go to Venezuela in April 1984 when Oatis and Cowan were arrested on their return at Kennedy International Airport in New York City. Customs officials seized some 300 grams of cocaine worth about $5,000 hidden in a talcum powder bottle in Oatis's suitcase and a list of stu dents who had paid for the drugs in Cowan's luggage, Nevas said. Nevas said Holmes had arranged the trip, helped collect $4,800 from Miss N.J. may hobble ilown aisle - ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (UPI) -- Miss New Jersey, the beauty queen who had to go to court to keep her crown, had more trouble -- a knee injury that might force her to hobble on crutches in the Miss America pageant swimsuit competition. Toni Georgiana, 21, was resting with ice packs on the knee she bruised while doing a gymnastics routine in preliminary talent competition Wednesday Pageant officials said she w$s the first contestant injured onstage in at least 15 years. " After the accident on the last move of a gymnastics routine performed to "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue," Georgiana was rushed to Atlantic City Hospital. Anorthopedist said she should be able to compete in swimsuit preliminaries tonight but may need crutches. "It's so unfortunate when something like that happens," said Miss Ohio, Suellen Cochran, the winner in the first preliminary round in the talent category. "It's just so sad for the girls." Georgiana has been the subject of controversy ever since she won her Miss New Jersey crown because she never worked, lived or attended classes in the Garden State before entering a local pageant. The Pennsylvania resident moved to New Jersey after winning the state pageant and successfully defended her title in court, arguing that register ing for a two-week physical education course at Trenton State was enough to meet eligibility requirements. She never attended the class and failed the course. Cochran, a blue-eyed blonde, won by performing a playful rendition of Liberace's "Variations on Chopsticks" on the piano. fellow students, and set up the sale of the drugs with two unidentified drug sellers in Caracas. Nevas said Oatis also accompa nied Holmes to Venezuela in March 1984 and brought back to Choate about 200 grams of cocaine. Holmes also was accused of giving Oatis a quantity of cocaine in De cember 1983 for resale to fellow students. "As a result, Holmes and Oatis became known by their classmates as the major distributors of cocaine on the Choate campus," Nevas said. Holmes, who is a U.S. citizen, faces charges of possession of co caine, which is punishable by up to 15 years Imprisonment, Nevas said. "It is my opinion that at the time, use of cocaine at the Choate school was very widespread," Nevas said. He said a grand jury investigation was continuing and said he expected more arrests of former students at Choate, which counts President John F. Kennedy among its graduates. Each of the 13 students charged with aiding and abetting in the scheme to import cocaine faces a maximum one year in federal prison and a $5,000 fine if convicted as adults. Daly said he also could impose an indeterminant sentence of up to six years under the Youth Offenders Act. Gambardello LONDON - The chief of the Sovi et KGB spy operation in London has defected to the West and exposed a major espionage network, prompt ing Britain to expel 25 Soviets in the largest spy ouster in more than a decade, the government announced Thursday. Hie British government gave the alleged spies, who included diplo mats, journalists, translators and a chauffeur, three weeks to get out of the country. ' In Washington, the defection of Oleg Gordievski, 46, was hailed as the most important since that of Arkady Shevchenko who defected from his position as undersecretary at the United Nations in 1978. Shev chenko is now a consultant for the CIA. The Soviet Embassy in London had no comment on Gordievski's de fection, but condemned as "unwar ranted" and "unfriendly" the order expelling the 25 Soviets. The Foreign Office siad Gor dievski officially had been a counsel or at the Soviet Embassy since June 1982 but in reality was the chief of the KGB espionage operation in Britain. It said Gordievski joined the KGB in 1962 and "recently become head of the KGB residency in London." In Washington, former CIA Depu ty Director Ray Cline called tlr defection "a great break" for th*. West at a critical time in fathoming Moscow's intentions before the forthcoming U.S.-Soviet summit in Geneva in November. "Most people don't realize how valuable it is when we get a defec tion like this," Cline said. "He can tell you things how the system works that confirm other data and re search and analysis that we do which require confirmation from in side sources." "It is a credit to the (Prime Minis ter Margaret) Thatcher government that they were abia to bring off such a high-level defection," Cline said. Officials refused to say when Gor dievski defected or to divulge where he was in Britain. He was believed under tight security. The Soviet charge d'affairs, Lev Parchine, was called to the Foreign Office and informed that Gordievski tel This Week at PRESTON WARD, DJC. "Mr. Gordievski was In a position to know full details of Soviet Intelli gence activities and personnel in this country," the Foreign Office said. • "Mr. Parchine was told- that a signifigant number of Soviet repre sentatives in London have been en gaged in intelligence activities, which were of course totally incom patible with their status and their declared tasks." "The Soviet charge was therefore informed that 25 Soviet officials, of whom six belong to the diplomatic staff, must leave within three weeks," the statement said.
