JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (UPI) - Blood tests conducted on two in­ mates at the Missouri State Peniten­ tiary show the Convicts have been exposed to AIDS, a state corrections official said Tuesday. "The tests do not show that they have AIDS, but indicate they were exposed to it," William Armontrout, prison warden, said in an interview with United Press International. Ray Bly, a state Division of Health official, said blood tests that show antibodies to the acquired immune deficiency syndrome are not count­ ed as confirmed cases of the disease in state health statistics. Bly, director of venereal disease prevention, said 70 cases of AIDS have been confirmed in Missouri since the first case was diagnosed in 1962. He said 35 of the victims have died. One AIDS case, the first con­ firmed in the state, was diagnosed in 1982. Six cases were confirmed in 1963 , 28 in 1984 and 35 so far this year. Dr. Denny Donnell, state director of disease prevention, emphasized that the two inmates diagnosed as exposed to AIDS are the only known cases of exposure discovered so far in the state's prison population of almost 10,000 convicts. "The case did not meet the crite­ ria for AIDS," said Donnell. He said neither of the convicts complains of feeling ill or demon­ strates any of the. symptoms of AIDS. Bly said antibodies in blood indi­ cating exposure to AIDS "doesn't tell us someone has AIDS or that they will develop it, although a cer­ tain percentage of such people will get it." Armontrout said there was no ap­ parent unrest among other inmates at the maximum security institution because the two convicts were ex­ posed to AIDS. About 2,100 convicts are housed at the prison. One of the prisoners exposed to the disease is a parole violator from St. Louis and the other was trans­ ferred to the penitentiary from the Missouri Training Center for Men at Moberly.
