We'll take a couple of days off and then go back to work, then take the weekend off and get ready for Northern Illinois," Green said Tpesday. "We're feeling real good about the Missouri win but there are things we have to do to Improve." 4 .1 Northwestern sacked Missouri quarterback Marion Adler eight times, thanks to a new defensive alignment Green installed this year. Under the new formation, Green has four defensive linemen but shifts po sitions constantly. "We went away from a 3-4 and went to this. Basically, we have all of the position players on the line shifting. A defensive end on the weak side can be a defensive tackle on the strong side on another play," Green said. "It would have worked well against Duke in our opener but they were playing an identical defense." Northwestern, whose Achilles heel has always been Its defense, would have gone to the new "40" defense before but It has lacked the size up front and numbers on defense to accomplish it, Green said. "It isn't so much the size because you can have smaller guys doing it," Green said "1 wanted to do It two years ago but We didn't hive the numbers of people on the squid to do it We do now." For Northwestern to be 1-1 it this time of the yeir is unusuil, but whit is even more unique is i realistic opporianity to be 4-1 if the Wlldciti can dispose of NIU, Indiana and Minnesota In successive weeks. Northwestern his dominated the Boosters and Gophers -- the only two teams in the leigue they have handled-- In recent years. "I don't know If 1 ever said we could be 4-1 but I think if we can continue to improve ind play like we did that we have 8 chance," Green said The Wildcats would like to im prove play on their special teams, an area of concerned voiced by Green after the Missouri game. His failure to be a draft choice cost him in his pocketbook apd with his pride. «"It cost me some money not being drafted," McKinnon recalls. "Those are the breaks." ^McKinnon made his own breaks. Ife got a tryout with the Bears and eventually grew in the favor of Chi cago head coach Mike Dltka. Today, McKinnon is in his third year and Is tfte top receiver for the defending I^FC Central Division champions. ^McKinnon is not afraid to speak lib mind, something that got him iflto hot water with FSU coach Bob by Bowden. *"I don't think he wanted a receiv er that spoke his mind," said McKinnon, who didn't start his se nior season. "But I'm the kind of guy who, if something is bothering me, I want t2> get If off my mind. Again, It cost me a lot of money." -McKinnon has few kind words for Hbwden. :"I don't want to get into that," McKinnon says. "They wanted me to be a lifetime alumnus there and I don't want to be a part of that." Ironically, Dltka and McKinnon get along very well. -"He's been saying a lot of good things about me since I've gotten here," McKinnon said. Dltka pays McKinnon one of the highest honors the Bears' coach Is willing to give to a player. "What can you say? He is a coach's player," Ditka said. "He works very hard in practice and it pays off in the field." One thing that may have endeared McKinnon to Ditka is the wide re ceiver's willingness to play hurt. Last year, he dodged tacklers even though he needed knee Sur gery. This week, he plans to start against Minnesota even though he has a sprained ankle, a hip pointer, his knee hurts and he has muscle aches "all over." "A little time in the water and I'll be OK," McKinnon said. All may not be completely sweet ness and light between McKinnon and the Bears for too much longer. The 6-foot-l, 185-pounder is in the final year of his contract. He also Is a talented receiver on a dub that does not like to pass too much. "I'm a patient person so I know that maybe later in the season the Bears will do something to reward me" McKinnon said.
