Dollar up gold down By Mary Tobin UPI Business Writer NEW YORK - The dollar ad vanced Tuesday, partly in response to the spy scandal in West Germany. Gold fell and silver dropped below $6 an ounce for the first time since July. "The dollar was subjected to a volatile and wide-swinging day and there's no one reason to explain the moves," said James McGroarty, vice president at Discount Corp. of New York. He noted that many deal ers were attributing the dollar's rise to news that the West German spy scandal had spread to include a sec retary in Chancellor Helmut Kohl's office. "But Europeans sold the dollar before they went home and then it suddenly roared back up for no ap parent reason," McGroarty said. Bruce Brittain, vice president at Salomon Brothers International, said the buying could represent posi tioning ahead of housing starts and the "flash" gross national product report due out this week. "The dollar still is in trading range and will stay there until the direction of the economy becomes clear," Brittain said. McGroarty agreed and said the housing and GNP reports probably will cause "lots of activity. We react so violently to each report that if the statistics differ from expectations we're likely to see a fair amount of volatility. "But the market doesn't have have the feeling of a sharp move in either dhirection," McGroarty said. In London, the British pound eased to $1.3417 from Monday's $1.3432 and in New York it fell to $1.3351 from $1.3431. The dollar rose to $1.3763 Canadi an from $1.3753. In fact, thousands of adolescents in Illinois suffer from problems serious enough to require professional guidance. The same proportion of teenagers as adults suffer from emotional problems. Adolescence is a time of "growing pains" and, consequently , some confusion. As they slowly move from dependence to independence, adolescents struggle with educational and career decisions, peer pressure and emerging sexuality. - Some teens can't handle the pressure. Some may abuse drugs, become delinquent or run away. Still others become extremely depressed -- some enough to try suicide. Suicide ranks as the second leading cause of death among adolescents. - A teenager experiencing emotional problems should be taken seriously. If you think your teenager may need help, call us.
