Page fr McHENRY PLAINDEALER Section A Thursday, September 19,1985 Sports East St. Louis Sr. tops poll; Richmond receives votes in 2A By United Press International CHICAGO -- The United Press International board of coaches again voted East St. Louis Senior the top spot for the second straight week among the Class 6A powers in the weekly high school prep poll. The unbeaten Flyers, gunning for third consecutive Class 6A crown, rung up 60 points in beating Granite City last weekend. The poll was re leased Tuesday. Richmond-Burton, which ran its record to 3-0 with a thrilling 6-5 win over Harvard Friday, received votes in Class 2A. Fellow Big Eight Conference member Hampshire re ceived votes in the Class 1A poll. East St. Louis Senior head coach Bob Shannon believes "my special teams, especially the punt return unit, continues to wreck havoc against the opposition." Shannon said he was surprised to learn a report surfaced in Chicago from King High School where it was alleged that No. 2 St. Laurence was the team to beat in Class 6A. Cnce S t . Lau rence ba re ly squeezed by Mt. Carmel of Chicago and lost its quarterback for the sea son and possibly it's number one tailback, Shannon and other UPI coaches voting in the poll stayed With East St. Louis as the top choice. Unbeaten Amboy, which went on to win the state title in Class 2A after topping Marian Central in the semifinals last year, received all 15 votes and coach Don Wyzgowski said his team can sail along until the test two games when the team en- coun te r s P rophe t s town and Morrison. * In Class 5A, East St. Louis Lincoln barely nosed out Joliet Catholic for the number one spot as Belleville West dropped out of the elite 10 after its loss to St. Laurence. Because the Illinois High School Association hasn't released final fall enrollment figures to base team se lection, many coaches had to hedge their bets on a number of teams which may shift classes. For example, Carl Sandburg has been voted on as a class 5A school, but could easily move into the big ger school classifications. The same holds true for schools such as Rich East and Urbana who are on the borderline between Class 4A and Class 5A enrollments.x • Unbeaten Morris collected 13 of a possible 15 first place votes to top Class 4A teams, but a number of coaches are saying that Springfield Griffin and Rock Island Alleman are still worthy contenders. In the class 1A voting, unbeaten Areola and Jacksonville Routt con tinued to run 1-2 in the balloting with Concord Triopia a close third. Tuesday & Thursday 12" Softball League Details from Tuesday night's games in the Park & Rec Depart ment Tuesday-Thursday 12" Fall Softball League: Back Door 10, Huckleberry 4 Back Door Tavern scored five runs in the bottom of the first and never was headed off, cruising past Huckleberry Inn, 10-4. Back Door improved to 3-2 on the season, while the loss sent Huckle berry to 1-4 on the year. Mike Davis led the way with two hits and four RBI, including a three- run homer in the first. Terry Hovseth and Tom Worcak Board mulls handicaps for males By United Press International NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - A state athletics board, faced with five skirt-clad boys on a girls' high school field hockey team, said Wednesday it is considering handi caps and other ways to even up the sides. The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association is examining measures to "mitigate existing cir cumstances," said executive direc tor Richard Neal. One proposal would place girls teams with male players in tougher tournament brackets to make com petition more fair. Boys would be totally prohibited from competing in girls field hock ey, volleyball and other sports if the MIAA had its way, Neal said. A state Supreme Court ruling in the late 1970s, however, overturned an MIAA policy that barred boys from all-girl teams. "Girls' athletic programs have de veloped tremendously in the last 10 to 12 years and the rule (that the court overturned) protected those programs," Neal said. "We're fear ful that boys on girls teams presents a health and safety risk for girls and upsets the competitive balance that exists." A MIAA subcommittee may come out with a preliminary report next Thursday, he said. y The issue of boys playing all-girl sports has attracted recent publicity by five Northampton High School male seniors who donned tartan blue skirts in order to play on the girls' field hockey team. An unprecedented 200 fans turned out for the game, which Northamp ton lost, 3-1, the team's first defeat of the season. added two hits apiece, with Worczak driving in two runs. McH Specialties 13, Novotny 0 Dave D'Angelo allowed just two hits, and Jeff Schaefer drove in four runs, as McHenry Specialties routed Novotny Sales, 13-0. Schaefer homered and singled to lead the Specialties offense. Steve Schiera also had two hits including a homer, and drove in three runs. Phil Schmitt added a solo round-tripper.. D'Angelo went 3-for-3, while Ed Hughes doubled twice,, scored twice and had two RBI. McHenry Specialties is 3-2, No votny is 2-3. Greg's 33, Ace Hardware 2 Greg's Never Inn kept its unbeat en record intact in fine fashion, whipping Ace Hardware 33-2. Greg's scored at least two runs in every inning, including a whopping ld-run fourth frame. Leading the way for the winners were Willie Howard and Steve Him- pleman, bQth of whom went 5-for-5 and scored three runs. Rick Neiss added four nits --three of them for extra bases -- and four runs scored, while Bob Michels, Mark Jess and Tore Sivertsen all went 3-for-5. Greg's is 5-0, Ace is 1-4. m - Benjamin Moored Interior Pai W "Believe me, Jane. You '11 thank your lucky walls you bought Regal Aquavelvet, the childproof paint'.' You would think he would be concerned, but he wasn't. Brow- nell's consistency throughout the six-month Lake Geneva season allowed for him to relax, for the most part, on the final night of the year. He needed just one point to assure himself of the points championship, and the third place finish Saturday night got him more than enough to do that. Fran Prestay of Silver Lake, Wis., won the feature race, Woodstock's Kevin Rein was sec ond, with Brownell finishing third and Crystal Lake's Eddie May fifth. Bro«»noii and fellow driver Bill Wilke of Oconomowoc were cheered in the victory circle fol lowing the racing, and the crowd sang 'Happy Birthday' to both BrOwnell and his father. Brow- nell's fans came prepared with large signs and a banner con gratulating his championship. In the hobby stocks class. Johnsburg's Dave Mehlan won the fourth heat and finished sev enth in the 10-lap feature. Mc- Henry's Larry Harvey was ninth in the feature. Woodstock's Tom Clunk was second in the eight-lap semifeature, and won the first heat. Dennis Carlton of* McHenry finished second in the Enduro 101, the richest racing Sunday in Lake Geneva Raceway history. Carlston finished behind Denny Jensen of Pell Lake, Wis., who earned $1,001 for the win. Carl s ton took home $389 .01 fo r second.
