Ladies' Golf McHENRY COUNTRY CLUB Although the day began under overcast skies, it turned out to be a bright finish for some of the ladies at McHenry Country Club, as the played Beat the Pro for their last scheduled event of the season. Don Habjan, gracious pro that he is, posted a 76 to give the gals both a challenge and a chance. Those who met the challenge with their net scores were Carol Cooney with 74, Liz Nolan with 72, Joan Buss with 70, Dot Freund with 75, Carol Barnicle with 70, Speedy Neuman with 68 and Kathy Haugan with 69. Part of Liz Nolan's good luck was attributable to a hole-in-one on the number 8 green. She and her golf mates just stood there and watched as the ball plopped in the cup after a single bounce. Having the pro stand ing there watching didn't seem to ruffle her feathers. A handful of birdies and chip-ins were recorded on this mid-Septem ber day. Flying up to the birdie tree were Dot Freund on 9, Dee Overton on 15, Liz Nolan on 17 and Carol Cooney on both 12 and 17. Carolyn Harger had a fine chip-in on 2 to save par as did Linda Puccio on 10. Dot Freund got her birdie on 9 with the same kind of action. Although she didn't beat the pro, Mickey Farmer had low putts ovpr the field with 29 roll-ins. Those gar nering 30 putts each were Liz Nolan, Dee Overton, Carol Barnicle and Speedy Neuman. And the final Sandy of the Week title goes to Caro lyn Harger, who found many, many of the traps. Toward the end of the round, she became expert enough to give lessons on exiting the sand pits. Maybe next eyar she'll be giving lessons on how to avoid entering same. By and large, the season has been a fine one for the ladies. There have been remarkable improvements for some, a lowering of handicaps for several, a welcoming of new mem bers, good weather and good course Conditions. The ladies are truly thankful for the guidance of the pro and for Superintendent Jeff Michels' fine grooming of the course. And, the Good Lord willin' and the creek don't rise, everyone is looking for ward to next year and more... Happy Golfing!
