NORTHWEST HERALD Section B Friday, September 20,1985 Entertainment Rowe home is barn turned residence It takes an adventurous pair of home buyers to say, "yes," to a Realtor offering to show a three-bedroom barn with a view. So far, Dean and Jean Howe haven't regretted their decision. Entering the converted structure they were overwhelmed by the uniqueness and style of the restructured barn-turned-residence. The Rowe home is one of four on the Home Tour of Holiday Hospitality Day sponsored by the Auxiliary of Memorial Hospital for McHenry County to be held Wednesday, October 2. The Home Tour will take place between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. It is recommended that those attending wear comfortable shoes to maximize their enjoy ment of the day. In the early 1980's Arnold and Louise Tobler, the previous owners, took upon themselves the challenging task of converting the Bull Valley landmark into a modern, livable homestead. Constructed over 100 years ago, the barn retains its original superstucture of peg ged beams while the new interior walls are fashioned from New Hampshire white pine. The Interior spaciousness remains uncompromised through the use of a huge central staircase and balcony overlooking the first floor. The loft provides privacy for the bedroom area while creating a spectacular vault effect. . Overcoming the stark simplicity of the open floor plan is an umlnstakable sense of warmth provided by the liberal use of wood throughout. Much of the wood was originally brought to Bull Valley from New England. The Rowes are so pleased with their new home that they have plan ned virtually no changes. First year projects have included the addi tion of a stair and balcony railing and the long, though rewarding, search for a harvest table and chairs for the expansive dining room. And, since Dean and Joan were inhabiting the barn, they felt it was only fair to build a "house" for their horses and have done so with the addition of an architecturally complimentary stable. Finding Just the right furnishings for this unusual home will pro vide a delightful challenge for the Rowes in years to come. A fireplace Is In their plans for the future. One of the most enjoyable legacies from the Toblers is a fabulous perennial garden of flowers and herbs which provides a decorative enhancement to the Rowe's home as well as the practical element of easy care. The aromatic herbs give pleasure to the senses outside and add flavor to Joan's cooking inside. The garden is even more en- Converted from an barn to a residence in the early 1960's, The Rowe home is one four that will be toured during Holiday Hospitality Day on Wednesday Oct. 2. Joyable when viewed from the 40' by 15' deck, which wraps around the front and side of the second floor offering a sensational country vista. Dean and Joan look forward to giving parties in their unusual home and their friends share their anticipation. Visitors often tell them how lucky they are to own such a unique home.
