APR FINANCING 0 ON ALL REMAINING '85'S THAT QUALIFY By Ray Hill Here are several car-care tips that might come in handy: Seeing thoae invisible timing marks: As the years roll by, corrosion often makes the ignition timing marks on the timing tab impossible to see with your timing light. Here's a quick solu tion to the problem. Take a piece of white chalk and cover the timing tab with It. Now wipe the chalk off with your finger. Chalk will remain In the number indentations (see accompanying drawing), making them clearly visible. Now you can use your timing light to check or adjust the timing to be sure it is at the specification called for in the shop man ual for your car. Cleaning areas where gaskets seal: Using fine emery cloth or fine-grade sandpaper may be a tempting way to remove every last bit of foreign gasket material from valve covers, oil pans and other areas where gaskets will fit. This Is a bad Idea. Invisible abrasive particles can remain, even after you've washed the area with cleaning solvent, and these particles can shorten the life of bearings and other moving parts. The correct way to remove gasket material is with a scraper. You can buy one at an auto parts supply store. It's Inexpensive and will last Indefinitely. And remember, as I have stressed many times In this column -- for a good seal, you must remove every last tiny speck of old gasket material. adhesive that holds body side molding in place sometimes loosens, allowing the molding to hang down. Unless repaired, the molding will eventually fall Off. Here's how you can re-attach it. First you need a good adhesive. There are various brands. Two that I have found that work well are Velcro 40 and 3M Super Weatherstrip Cement. Both work well for a variety of automo tive and household bonding jobs. The first thing you want to do when attaching molding that dangles is to be sure the area is clean. Wash the area where the molding will be glued with soapy water. Rinse the area thor oughly and allow to dry. The next thing you're concerned with is being sure the molding is attached in a straight line. The easiest way to accomplish this is to take a piece of masking tape (available at auto parts stores) and use it as a guide. If the masking tape becomes crooked, simply pull it off and try again. Position the masking tape so you can use the bottom edge of the tape as a guide to positioning the top edge of the molding. Once the masking tape is in place, apply adhesive to the back of the molding and press the molding in place, following the instructions on the container. Once the adhesive is dry, remove the masking tape. Don't drive the car or let anybody lean against the molding until the adhesive has dried. If the molding has completely fallen off and ^disappeared, you can buy a new piece of mold ing through the dealer who sells your brand of car.
