WE HAVE 7.7* APR FINANCING Hie 1986 Celica GT Sport Coupe, with its aerodynamic car with the economy and dependability characteristic profile and stylish lines, embodies the spirit of a sports of the Celica line, which started 16 years ago. Celica is 'Sweet 16' Toyota subcompact mixes economy, style TORRANCE, Calif. -- The Toyota Celica, a pioneer in the sporty subcompact class, turns "sweet 16" in 1966, dressing for its birthday in a sleek new aerodynamic body, with front-wheel drive and a beefy 2.0 liter, twin-cam, 16-valve powerplant under the hood. In the 16 years since .the first production -models began appear ing in Japan, the Celica has evolved f r o m a s i m p l e economy car with a sporty touch into a stylish, affordable, - sporty performance car that has become one of the best-selling in its class. The star of the 1986 Celica line is the GT-S, ? with its new 135- horsepower, 16-valve engine. The GT-S joins the GT and ST models to round out the Celica family of state-of-the- art, fun-to-drive two- door couples and three-door liftbacks. "We've succeeded in combining a touch of luxury with a sporty, high-tech design and packaged it all into a car that is fun and ex citing to drive," said Bob McCurry, senior vice president of Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. y "The Celica has very broad appeal. The aerodynamic styl ing and front-wheel drive improve fuel economy, while the GT-S model's ag gressive twin-cam, 16- v a l v e h i g h - performance engine, 4-wheel disc brakes, rear spoiler and power adjustable bucket seats enhance ' the sporty image. And the interior's high-tech in strumentation and comforts give the Celica a luxurious feel," McCurry added. For 1966, the Celica boasts a new rounded aerodynamic profile. The streamlined body is-accented by retrac table headlamps, a low roof-line, a more deep ly raked front wind shield, a rounded "C" pillar design, a larger front air dam and a large rear spoiler. Equipped with a spoiler, the drag coef ficient drops to an im pressive 0.31. Vnder the hood, the same 2.0 liter elec tronically fuel injected engine that powers Toyota's popular Camry sedans is featured in the ST and GT models. But the big news for enthusiasts is the Celica GT-S, with its high-output twin- cam engine. Similar in design to the highly praised 1.6-liter twin- cam found in the Toyota MR2 sports car, the new 2.0-liter configuration features t h e s a m e h i g h - revving, 6800 rpm redline power and the p r o v e n T o y o t a Variable Injection System (T-VIS) for better fuel economy and performance. The revolutionary engine boosts the Celica GT-S's power output by 16 percent over previous models to an impressive 135 horsepower at 6000 rpm -- enough power to push the car from zero to 60 mph in 8.2 seconds -- more than two seconds faster than the 1985 model. Maximum output for the GT and ST models is 97 horsepower at 4400 rpm. The 1986 Celica. engines are mounted transversely to ac commodate a major drivetrain change to front-wheel drive. The result is an increase in interior space and a lower driving position, which helps create a m o r e h i g h - performance feel. "Torque steer," a common problem in f r o n t - w h e e l d r i v e vehicles, has been combatted by Toyota engineers with the ad dition of a more rigid equal-length drive- shaft design. The Celica's already smooth, stable ride has been enhanced with the adoption of four-wheel indepen dent suspension and a longer wheelbase. The front suspension, a M a c P h e r s o n s t r u t design, receives an anti-sway bar, with an extra front cross member support on GT-S models. The rear suspension is a two- link design with an anti-sway bar. The suspension upgrades, c o m b i n e d w i t h variable-assist power rack-and-plnlon steer ing (all models), r - large 205/60RI4 itr • belted radlals (GTS models) gives the Celica road-hugging stability that lives up to its reputation as a f u n - t o - d r i y e ^ # r - former. A f o u r - s p e e d automatic overdrive transmission will be available on all models except the ST Coupe and GT-S Liftback. The GT-S Coupe, with automatic transmis s i o n , w i l l h a v e Toyota's Electronical- l y C o n t r o l l e d Transmission (ECT), presently used on the Camry, Cressida, Supra and selected truck models.
