Benjamin Weir said Thursday he carried a message to President Reagan at the end of his nearly 500 days captivity in Lebanon -- the United States must act quickly or other American prisoners may be executed. Weir, told a news conference that his captors, Shiite Moselm extremists, have one demand, "namely, the release of 17 prisoners being held in Kuwait." Killer quake hits Mexico MEXICO CITY - A killer earthquake ripped through central Mexico Thursday, devastating portions of Mexico City and starting hundreds of fires and taking a heavy toll of life. Channel 13, the only Mexico City station able to stay on the air, said there were 250 confirmed deaths but the toll was exacted to go much higher. The Dow managed a gain of 6.39 to 1,306.79, while broader indicators rose more decisively. The New York Stock Exchange index added 1.00 to 106.00 while Standard & Poor's 500- stock index advanced 1.68 to 183.39. The price of an average share in creased 31 cents. die or upper 60s. By United Press International Thunderstorms brought flooding and some hail to portions of New Mexico Thursday, dousing much of the Southwest, but a drought in West Virginia forced the closing of three elementary schools. Showers and thunderstorms also were scattered along the south At lantic coast, over southern Florida and parts of the upper Mississippi Valley. Rain fell from the northern Plains to the northern and central Rockies. Minor flooding was reported in Carlsbad, N.Mr, early Thursday and a flash flood watch was posted for the southeast plains of New Mexico. Heavy rain had already fallen across the area and more was expected. A drought in Nicholas County, West Virginia, forced officials to close three elementary schools this week as water was being shipped in on tanker trucks. The schools may reopen Friday or Monday if water levels permit, said David Groves, chairman of the wa ter system that serves the area. Officials said if the dry spell con tinues for anotner week, more than 10 public service districts will be forced to start emergency water conservation measures.
