VALUE and get 2 burgers for the price of 1 at your favorite Burger King restaurant Marian natters win first of year By Plaindealer sports staff ROUND LAKE - The only thing Megan Carney knew was that she was the last Marian Central tennis player left on the court. She didn't know that the match between Marian Central and Round Lake was tied 2-2, and that the out come of her match -- the No. 3 singles battle -- would decide the outcome of Northwest Suburban Conference meet Thursday afternoon. But Hurricane coach Tom Burg though maybe it was better Carney didn't know what situation she was in. So nobody said anything until the match was over. Carney came through in the clutch, however, by winning her match 6-2, 6-4 and propelling the Hurricanes to their first win of the season -- a 3-2 decision over the Panthers at Round Lake's courts. "We finally have a taste of it. We'd sure like to do more of it," Burg said. "It's nice to be over and done with it. It makes walking on the court next time a little easier." Marian spikers hold off Rams By Plaindealer sports staff WOODSTOCK -- After the first game and one half, Marian Central's volleyball team looked like it would make mincemeat out of Grayslake. But then the Rams decided to wake up. The Hurricanes blew an 11-4 lead in the second game, and then had to hold off a riled up GL team in game three to post a 15-4, 14-16, 15-13 Northwest Suburban Conference Thursday afternoon. \ "We just bascially let (town,'\ Hup/ ricane coach Tom Faber said. vWe had them where we wanted them, but we didn't put them away." The Hurricanes lifted their confer ence record to 5-3 with the win while upping their overall mark to 5-4. MC travels to Johnsburg Tuesday. We want to get things going this week, make a few things happen, put some points on the board. We feel with a win this week, we can make some headway toward the rest of the year." Mag- giore said. On offense, the Green Wave will try to throw the football -- a lot. "They throw. I would say, about 70 percent of the time." Schlender said. "But as far as we're concerned, a passing team like St. Ed's will cause less problems for us than a running team would. Our strong suit defensively is the ability to defend the pass. Our best defense game all /Coaluturd from pagr 121 year was against Riverside-Brook- field (an 8-6 loss), which threw the ball a lot." Schlender said. "Our linebackers and defensive backs can matchup with St. Ed's speed-wise. I think we'll be able to use our speed effectively, "Offensively, our confidence was shaken a little bit last week. We moved the ball well at times, but couldn't score. We haven't put the a lot of points on the board in the last couple of weeks. We'd like to change that." "1 look for a good game," Schlender added. "It looks like a good match-up." (Mark Meyer contributed to this story.) Wauk. W. boots Warriors By Plaindealer sports staff McHENRY -- The McHenry soc cer team battled neck-and-neck with Waukegan West at West Campus Thursday, but the Warriors fell short, 4-0. McHenry trailed 1-0 entering the fourth period, but WW scored three goals late to take the win. "It was pretty close up until about midway in the fourth quarter," said MCHS coach John Sytsma. "After we got down 2-0, we tried to move some people up to try to score, and we didn't have enough defenders back to do the job. "It was a very physical game. They have 23 major fouls on them, and we had six against us. It's not the kind of soccer I like to play. "We had our chances to score, though. Their goalie made a diving save of a shot in the air, a shot by Steve Peter. Ivan (Cvitkovic) also had a good chance on a breakaway. We also had numerous other shots, but just didn't put the ball in the net. We could have been leading 2-1 after three periods, but we just couldn't score." The loss dropped the Warriors to 1-8 overall. McHenry is 0-3 in the Fox Valley Conference. Wednesday, the locals lost an 8-1 decistanr to a tough Titan crew at RockfflrdBoylan. "They were really good," said Sytsma. "A good goalie, and good players all the way around. They got six in the first quarter, and it was 7-0 at the half, so it was 1-1 in the second half." Cvitkovic scored the goal, his -- and the Warriors' -- sixth of the year. The junior tallied off assists from Peter and Mark McClaughry. The Warriors will return to Fox Valley Conference action Tuesday at Crystal Lake South. WILL IT LAST? Step up toa New LENNOX HIGH EFFICIENCY PULSE OR CONSERVATOR III FURNACE. "We didn't do too well tonight," said McHenry golf mentor Chuck Cuda, whose team won its first dual meet of the season against Elgin Monday. "Our top two men didn't shoot too well." Central's Dave Key took medalist honors with a 39, one stroke ahead of McHenry sophomore Jim Simon, who fired a 40, his best round of the year. Brian Franks and Todd Weinholtz were next for the Warriors with 45s. Darren Mereness shot a 46 and Chris Howerton a 47. The Warriors will take part in the rugged Lake Forest Invitational Saturday. "There are some good teams there, that's for sure," Cuda said. "We're going to be in for it there, but we'll just have to do our best." Among the squads at the LFI will be Deerfield, St. Charles and New Trier. "I'm going to take a lot of sopho mores, let them get some experi ence," Cuda said. "Next year, I think we'll be tough." j WINTER BOAT STORAGE $13 PER FOOT (INSIDE ONLY) • EXAMPLE 18' BOAT »23400 OCT. 15th TO MAY 15th SIX MONTH , PAYMENT PLAN HUSIUR STORAGE & RENTAL CORP.
