"Three cars were ahead of him, only one pulled over. This was not the first time I witnessed such a hap pening. Don't people realize these cars are emergency vehicles? "If it were their house burning or a loved one inured in an accident they ^ would pull over. It appears to me that some people have no conception as to the importance of these vehicles. "Let's have a little respect for the volunteers. One day we might need their help and they will not be available because the driver of a car would not let them pass. "DeidreK Kent" REER PARTY "Dear Public Pulse: "At the end of North Court street is one of the most beautiful natural woods around. Deer have been seen in • it this summer. It is being misused. "On Sunday evening Aug. 1, the city police arrested three squad cars full ot teenagers who were in the woods /Slaving a beer party. Besides the open t bottles of beer in each of the kid's hands, the trunks of the police cars were filled with six-packs, etc. One boy said he was 12 years old. Some of tlie girls looked 13 or 14 years old. While the police were in the woods, three car loads of kids drove up, saw the police cars and left. They were really going to have a big party. "The next day some returned to the woods and carried out more cases of beer. "These kids have been harassing the people whose property borders the woods for years. / r \ "We have been watching the papers \ to see what happened to the kids, but for some reason it's being kept out of the newspapers. We think the people of McHenry should be aware of what's going on. Where are they getting all the beer? What's being done about it? "Sincerely, " Elaine and Hank Nell" Continue Tests For Retardation Gov. James R. Thompson has signed into law SB 1218, sponsored by Sen. Jack Schaffer, R-Cary, which provides for continuation of testing for mental retardation and other metabolic diseases in newborn children. The measure was signed into law at the Illinois State Fair. Mental retardation and other metabolic diseases in newborns is cal led "Phenylketonuria" and is commonly referred to as "PKU". If this genetic disorder goes untreated, it causes severe retardation in infants because of the accumulation of toxic metabolic products. SB 1388 provides that the Depart ment of Public Health will continue to test for the disease indefinitely. Had the measure not been approved, testing would have ended Dec. 1,1983. 1 - * Jf n ' Public Building Commission Vacancy The Courhouse . Hos your child seen a Dentist this past year? K not, maybe his or her teeth ore being neglected. Many children will tell their parents about their teeth and gums only after they hurt. Many times it's too late for Preventive Dentistry at this point. Don't neglect your children's teeth. Bring them in for check-ups. preferably twice a year. Children need these check-ups becouse decay spreads faster in their teeth due to their oral bocteria and the amount of sugar that they Nt. Also, they may not know how tp properly clean their teeth Parents, be wise dental consumers and don't wait until youf-chTldren's teeth hurt. Bring them/tn twice a year for check-ups, and keep their smiles healthy and bright. By the way, you'll save money by having your kids routinely see their Dentist. We knew that if steRsetaaee to grow and learn and become productive memcers oc society, they must attain food health and maintain It. So, by providing com* prehensive health servtcea In the schools, we can help assure that our children have the boot poooiMe i. lear ning environment During the 1982-83 school yom, under I- SNAP, training for hearing, vision and spinal testing will be offered to Wnots school SSSSiSSSASSk A new program is being offered to about 200 school nurses They will be taught how to test children for signs of spinal abnormalities, such as curvature of the spine. Two hundred trained nurses means the screening will be available to about 600,000 school children. The I-SNAP course for spinal tooting will be offered seven times during the school year at seven different locations throughout Illinois. It is s two- semester-hour course which requires two hill days of training. The state health department is con ducting the course in cooperat ion with Southern I l l inois university; so nurses who take the training can earn two hours of either graduate or undergraduate credit. Continuing Education Units will be swsrded to thoee who want them. Courseo in vision and hearing screening will also be offered during this school year These will be offered nine times each, and par ticipants will earn three semeoter hours of grsduate or un dergraduate credit for each course, or Con tinuing Education Units for those who want them. College credits are not mandatory for thoee nurses who want the training but do not need or want the academic credita. The dates of the courses have been staggered so that a nurse who is interested in all three can work them into her schedule. Through such training, school nurses can make an even more important contribution, not only to the health of Illinois school children but to the children's ability to reach their tan potential.
