Sherland | The entire worid will not be able | to produce, enough automobiles to supply the demand this year. On December 31, 1918, it was es- timated that thers were only 15545 4 finished cars in the hands of auto-| mobile manufacturers. This repre- | sents only three day's normal produc- | tion--three days' normal sales. + The market literally has been drained by the first wave of the con-| stantly increasing tide of prosperity | which is now sweeping over the coun- try. - The situation, already acute in| many cities, is bound to grow worse! this spring. , : i Owing to the relatively small pro-| duction the last two years there is a . 'shortage of 700,000 automobiles in | the United States at.the present] time,. according ~ to government | figures. | In 1918. the total production of| cars was 1,044,754 against 1,737,151 the previous year. In 1916 the produc- tion was 1,493617. So last year's pro- duction 'was the smallest 'since 1915, Normally, the output inereases at the rate of forty per centa year. Had this rate prevailed last year+the out- put would have been two and three- quarters of a million cars, or more than double what it actually was. In 1915 and 1916 there were ab- normal increases of fifty and eighty per cent respectively, but in 1917 the increase dropped to seventeen per cent. So there is an apparent short- age at the present « time y'of "700,000 cars, being the difference between actual production and what it would | have been under the normil forty per cent increase. Because of the slownegs of the re- turn to normal production it is esti- mated that the output ofscars in 1919 will be about half of th: three mil- lion yvhich would be needed to make up this shortage. The growth of the automobile busi- ness has been one of the marvels of modern times. In 1919 only 121861 cars were produced. In 1917 the pro- duction has increased to 1,737.000. The total capital invested is $1,297 - 000,000, which is three times as large as the outstanding stock of the en- tire Standard Oil company of thirty- five companies and exceed2d the capital of all the national banks at the end of 1916. * The wages paid in this industry, which is now the third largest in the United States, exceedad by $100,,000.- 000 all the gold in circulation in the United States to three-quarters of the government's ordinary receipts. There are now more than 4.000,000 automobiles in use in the United States alone. These cars develop] 100,000,000 horsepower or ten times For ALIENT IX oe ot YOUR OLD CAR Immediate Delivery N75 CASH OR MONTHLY PAYMENTS Telephone Evanston 578-579 er I res a traveled and passenger capacity these A eneral Motors of 11. 1019 Davis Street, Evanston nm ------------- mr ee tl
