"Organize your school and plant a memorial tree," says Charles Lathrop Pack, president of the association, who points to] what a fine memorial a living tree | wir make in 1940, if the class of 1920 | plarts a tree now. The association | will send free tree-planting instruc- | tions and a tree-planting day pro-, am to any one who asks for them. | {portant points for September are: | Prune all dead branches of impor- | tance. Do not prune unnecessarily ; | prune as little of the live wood as | possible; make all cuts close to ai trunk or main limb, and cover all wounds with coal tar. Remove and destroy egg masses of the tussock moth and like leaf-eating | insects. For removal in winter mark all] hopelessly infested and dead trees. | You can mark these better before the | leaves drop, but you can cut them | down to better advantage in winter. | Plant evergreens in early Septem- | ber. Move them with a ball of soil. | Every day this fall will be Arbor | day, the association says, and it urg-| es that all memorial tree planting be | reported, that it may enter these] trees on the national honor roll it is compiling, and for which it is send- ing out free certificates of registra- tion. The approaching Arbor days follow : : Georgia, first Friday in December; Hawaii, first Friday in Novsmber; Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Ili- nois, Towa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michi- gan, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Da- kota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Da- kota, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin, Washington, Wyoming, by proclama- tion of their respective governors: North Carolina, first Friday after November 1; Porto Rico, last Friday in November; South Carolina; third Friday in November; Tennessee, date in November named by the county superintendents. Making It a Family Affair Junior was much interested in his mother's approaching marriage. A short time before the date set for the wedding hiss mother was ill with ton- silitis. Junior was in distress and go- ing to his mother he said: "Mother, hurry up and get well, for it won't do for you to be sick when we marry *£312 93} ur se A13unod Yl] Ul [RIIUMSSY Se IIe SIuUIp[ing paionijsuod A[njai1ed pue 'pasSueiie Ap uatuaauod 'pauue(d Aqmypjysney], L777 T7277 77 7 E7777 77d 7777272 Zl Fall Is The Best Time ~ Te Plant Trees and Shrubs 7 A We havel aA nds trees, shrubber perennial/flowé which we"will set out for reasonable prices. I have been mere and more ceon- vinced, the more I think ef it, that, in general, pride is at the bottom of all great mistakes. All the other pas- sions do occasional good; but when- ever pride puts im its word, every- thing goes wrozg, and what it might really be desirable to do, quietly and "anocently, it is mertally dangerous to do preudly.--Ruskin. Doing One's Best. A sculptor who wanted to express an idea in tangible form might prefer clay to marble or wood to either. But if he were in earnest he would take what he could get--and express him- self through it as well as he could. It is taking what we can get and doing . best with it that makes all the difference between successful and un- successful lives.
