\ WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JANUARY 10, 1920 North Shore Y. M. C. A. Members May - Learn Manly Art of Defense at Evanston North Shore boys and men, mem- bers of the Evanston Y. M. C. A., will be interested to hear of the move- ment on foot to provide free boxing lessons for the members of the Y. M. C. A Free boxing lessons under the di- rection of Matt Dress, the "Y" box- ing instructor, are the latest addition to the already large curriculum of the Evanston Y. M. C. A. For the past seven or eight years, Dress has conducted a private class in the fistic art in the "Y" gym. In spite of the fact that these lessons were not free they have always been excellently attended. So country. 'Alhough the class has been going less than a month the attendance has reached 65, of which number 30 are men and 35 are boys. "Knows His Business" : "An excellent instructor," said Physical Director I. R. McKee, in speaking of Mr. Drees. ,'He knows his business thoroughly and his eight years' experience as a class trainer has taught him thoroughly how to handle a large group of men." The purpose of this course, as ex- plained by Mr. McKee is not the de- velopment of pugilists or "pug uglys." "To the sort of sport that pro- duces black eyes and broken noses," he said "we do not direct our atten- popular in fact has this sport grown since |= the war that the "Y" directors decid- ed this year to add it ti the free list In this it is one of' the first in the From Our 1920 Catalog Hose and Hose Supplies "The Right Kind" For Every Need W.H.Salishury& Co. The aim of the entire course is self-defence. We teach the boy and young man how to handle himself in an emergency, how to defend himself. It is the goal of the lessons to give the young men poise, quickness and self reliance." The first lessons consist largely of rope skipping, bag punching and cal- isthenics. Balance, quickness of eye and action, and muscular co-ordina- tion is the primary goal. The next step includes the block and parry training of defence, finally followed by work in offense. ""The Y. M. C. A. has purchased- for: the course gloves and punshing bags, and will erect a new platform for the bag. "We hope' to install in the boys a love for good clean sport." said Mr. McKee, "and believe that no one is better able to do that very thing than Matt Dress. In my ten years' experience as.a physical dir- ector I have never seen a man of the caliber of our trainer. In that I think all of his class will agree with me." The men's class meets on Wednes- day night at 8 o.clock and Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock. The boys class meets on Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock. The classes, which will extend through January, February and March, are still open and all who desire this kind of training are urg- ed by McKee to join at once METZ & HART PUT ON MANY WINTER TOPS Metz & Hart are equipping many north shore automobiles with espec- ally built new style plate glass wint- er tops. The top is designed along the lines of a well-known make which is used on Paige cars, and accord- ing to Mr. Metz it can be put on at a much smaller cost. Metz says he already has a long list of north shore automobile owners who have had the top put on their cars and are enthusiastic about it. One of the big advantages of this top is that it weighs much less than the old style wooden top, and it has no squeak or rattle. An automobile quipped with it can be converted into an open touring car in thirty minutes. |FORD LIGHT CHARMS RABBITS. . A AEE Recotinting his experience with the. Ford car, George Ambler, Detroit, Mich, teks the-folfowing: "It wae.im July 'this year. My wife and 'T were over in Canada. Traveling one mor»- ing at 2 o'clock on the road between Ridgetown and London, the glare from the headlights blinded two fat rabbits who remained in the direct path of the car. T promptly picked them up and, oh boy! how we em- joyed our rabbit dinner." ; ; This is just one more achievement credited to "The Universal €ar." [t's hard to tell which is the more expensive--the withering contempt of a woman with a half dozen children for the woman who has none or the pity of the woman who has none for the one who has a half dozen.
