WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, APRIL 3, 1920 Gain tn a a EL SCHOOL MEMORIAL TO BE DEDICATED SOON Werk on Beautiful Memorial Corner For Horace Mann Heroes Pro- gressing Rapidly; Dedication Soon ELEVEN LOCAL HEROES Village's Heroic Sons Are Paid ~ Tribute in Symbolic Composition ! Corridor Ne ¢& Plans for one of the most beauti- ful symbolic testimonials of the war are the Horace Mann Memorial, which is being rapidly completed. After many months of delay the unique school "Memorial Corner" is practically awaiting its dedication to the heroes in whose honor it was planned. As the final installment of the memorial must be made when the school is not in session, it is be- lieved that the committee in. charge will announce the dedication some | time during the summer. Inspiration Grows When the idea of the memorial first took form it was planned to put up a small tablet bearing the names of the lads but later a really beautiful scheme was developed which, it is felt, will not only be an inspiration to the children attend- ing the school, but a fitting tribute to those who sacrificed their young lives in the cause of world liberty. S. S. Otis Designer The design of the entire memorial has been made by a former Horace Mann boy, Samuel S. Otis, and has been enthusiastically received by the memorial committee and the school board. Tt is arranged to place the composition at the northern end of the corridor against the wall, which faces the principal school entrance on Elm street. In the center will stand, on a pedestal, a fine cast of the Winged Victory, the gift of Mrs. Franklin Rudolph, 745 Sheridan road. On each side of the pedestal is a green marble tablet, one bearing in bronze letters the names of the boys, while on the other will be either a quotation from Lowell's Commem- oration Ode or O'Hara's Bivouac of the Dead. Back of the Victory, ar- ranged in marble, are the eleven gold stars, covered with gold leaves, while above on the wall is what the committee hopes will be a really fine mural painting. It is now being made at the Art Institute, and again Mrs. Rudolph is the generous donor. In this painting the boys, soldiers and marines, carrying the flag, march upward into a realm of light, while above them fly the aviators in their planes. The scheme is treated as a whole design, with appropriate set- tings and mouldings, the color scheme of which will be made to harmonize with the surroundings. Certain steam pipes will have to be changed, as well as some of the wood work of the place and all this comes into the work of the committee. Committee Works Hard This committee consists of Mrs. W. A. Otis, chairman; Mrs. Charles S. Buell, secretary; Mrs. John Buck- ingham, treasurer; Mrs. Heyliger de Windt, Mrs. Carrie B. Prouty, Miss Kate Dwyer, Miss Emma Williams, and Mrs. Carrie S. Goodchild. Any- one wishing to contribute can send their donation to any of the above.
