10 THIS TWO-STORY SCHOOL CAN BE ERECTED .IN SECTIONS AS NEEDED Mr. E. H. Bennett who was engaged as the architect and city planner for Winnetka Plan Commission states "Without undertaking to approve of the plan published by your association or to advise in the matter of actual policy as to the school's location, I take this opportunity of saying that the scheme as outlined, is in harmny, with the Village Center plan. It provides an auditorium where originally suggested in this plan. I beg, therefore, to sug- gest to you, and others interested in this matter, that the problem be con- sidered from the standpoint of a progressive step in the general program of school house sites. If not inconsistent with this general program, then the plan for the Horace Mann site may be favorably regarded as being a starting point in a community center for the Village of Winnetka. Experts State Two-Story Building Less Expensive These men who vouch for the following statements are some of the largest builders in Chicago, if not in the country. They know what they are talking about! THOMPSON-STARRETT COMPANY Building Construction, Chicago "In our opinion, the cost per cubic foot for the construction of a one story or two story school house, both buildings being of the same design, there would be considerable saving per cubic foot in the two story building. This opinion is based upon our experience covering an extended field in building construction." THOMPSON-STARRETT COMPANY JOHN GRIFFTHS & SON CO. Builders, Chicago "It is our opinion that it will be considerably more economical per cubic foot of area to build a two story school building than a one story building. Outside of the fact that it would be more economical it would seem to us that it would be advantageous in other ways, viz: that not so much of the lot area would be taken up, which gives just this much more space for playground, and then again it would appear that the light facilities would be much better, as you would get direct light and ventilation all around in each class room." JOHN GRIFFITHS & SON COMPANY R. C. WIEBOLDT General Contractor, Chicago "With reference to the inquiry as to which is the most econ- omical construction--a one story school building or a two story school building, of same construction, we beg to state that un- questionably, a two story school building is less expensive. A one story building requires twice the roof area with twice the waste space above the ceiling more radiation for heating, with a consequent increase in maintenance, and longer runs of piping for heating, plumbing and electric work. A building spread over twice the area cannot be as economical to construct as the more compact two story type." R. C. WIEBOLDT JAMES SHEDDON & CO. Building Contractors, Chicago "In our opinion it is decidedly cheaper to erect a two story school building than a one story building, both containing the same number of rooms and floor area. We base our opinion on our experience in erecting buildings of this description." JAMES SHEDDON & CO The original letters are in the files of the association Additional and ample playgrounds for all children The Horace Mann site offers a complete and ample unit play- ground in excess of 80,000 square feet (more than two acres) for your children in the upper grades. For your children in the lower grades the Horace Mann site offers a complete unit play-ground twice as large as that now owned by the School Board. Both of these playgrounds would be located away from direct view or proximity of the school rooms which is desirable according to the School Board.
