WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY 1, 1920 11 CANDIDATES FAVOR GOOD ROADS MOVE Investigation Discloses Every Pres- idential Candidate Would Boost Good Roads For Entire Country Although the various presidential candidates may differ radically on al- most everything from the cause of the high cost of living to the best way of handling the League of Na- tions problem, there is one thing on which they agree. Without a single exception, all the candidates are in favor of good roads. Each is a whole hearted good roads booster and believes that the future economic welfare of the country de- pends largely unon the proper devel- | opment of the highways. Give Statements The opinions of the various candi- dates were expressed in statements recently made to the travel and transport bureau of the B. F. Good- rich Rubber company. The state- ments were decidedly characteristic of the men who made them. A per- son could almost tell, by simply read- ing the statements, who made them. even if their names were omitted. Herbert Hoover, for instance, said that good roads could be built and maintained only by the establishment of a proper organization. William G. McAdoo said that good roads were needed to supplement the railroads of the country, the failure of which developed a problem which seriously to keep pace with the country "has menaced our economic development and prosperity." War Showed Need Major General Leonard Wood, in advocating more and better roads said that their need had been clearly shown during the past war. Senator Poindexter stresses the fact that na- tional roads should be built with a view to military defense as well as civil and commercial use. Governor Frank O. Lowden pointed out the fact that good roads would check the flow of young men and women from the farms to the cities. Warren G. Harding declared that transportation has kept pace with human progress and asserted that unless better transportation could be provided future progress would be halted. Peace Highway William J. Bryan suggested that the perlb. . .. .; = =i." 49c | Kellogg's Corn F lakes, 2 pkgs. ...25¢ Honey, White Clover, per comb . .55¢ Knox's Gelatine, per eke... .. 19¢ MARKET SPECIALS Santa Clara Prunes, Sunsweet, 5-1b. Some of the statements of the can- didates follow : Herbert Hoover: "Arguments for i good roads are so evident that they need no reiteration. What is needed is organization to maintain what roads we have and to build more roads. Much of this must depend upon purely local effort and it is by the creation of organization to build up such activities that our country makes its best progress." Senator Warren GC. Harding: "Transportation has made every ave- nue of civilization. There is no ad- vancement in production and ex- change until there are highways to facilitate the transportation in- volved." Lessens Freight Costs Governor Frank O. Lowden: "Good roads mean greatly lessened trans- portation costs. The increase the value of the farms. They make con- solidated rural schools possible. With good roads life becomes easy and agreeable in the country and the flow of our young men and women from the country to the city is checked." William G. McAdoo: "The failure of the railroads to keep pace with the growth of the country has de- veloped a transportation problem which seriously menaces our econ. omic development and prosperity. Our best chance of immediate relief is great systems of state highways so laid out and constructed as to supply by automobile and motor truck the additional transportation facilities the country imperatively needs." Major General Lenoard Wood : "An adequate god road system is the commercial liason which makes for theh proper co-ordination of the re- ' puirements of producer, manufac- turer and consumer. The need for such a system was strikingly demon- strated during the war, and it is as great now as it ever was. Good roads mean better and more productive farms, bringing remote rural sections into clase touch with the market. By providing the development of farms we perform a service of inestimable value to the country as a whole." GOVERNOR PROCLAIMS SHIP-BY-TRUCK WEEK Calling upon the people of Illinois who are interested in transportation to give especial attention to the im- portance of the highways as part of the country's transportation system, Frank O. Lowden, Governor of Illi- nois and presidential aspirant, has by proclamation named the week of May 17 to 22 for observance as "Ship bv Truck" weekfl The proclamation follows "I take pleasure in calling the at- tention of the people of Illinois to the action being taken by the exec- utives of many of the other states of the union in naming the week of May 17 to 22 as 'Ship by Truck' Week. "The transportation system of the country will not be complete until our highways are improved so as to permit the use of both passenger cars and trucks throughout the entire year. The state of Illinois is mak- ing a most determined effort in the face of great odds brought about by existing conditions to complete, the earliest possible moment, such a system of highways reaching every section of the state. "In harmony with the action of the other states, I am asking all citizens of Illinois interested in transporta- tion to give special thought and at- tention during that week, not only to transportation by way of motor -------------------- We offer for your approval, very attractive up-to-date 1 | Tricolette Blouses Exceptional Values at $10.00 and up Also Children's Dresses at very reasonable prices Come and convince yourself 1126 Central ave, UNIQUE STYLE SHOP B.
