SATURDAY, MAY 29, 1920 Common Sense The country needs many things just now, how many no one has computed. Pretty nearly everything that influences the daily life of the average citizens could be changed with considerable advantage to the general public. There is no panacea provided for the correction of the manifold faults of our economic life. The many deficiencies suggest the need for many remedies. There is, however, one thing that would go far to bring order out of the chaos in which we seem to have lost ourselves, the practice of what we call ordinary common sense, that rarest of all virtues. The relief would not be instantaneous but it would be steady and that is the right way to change the social prder under which we live today to that for which we hope for tomorrow. Few of us have ordinary common sense. But let us each practice such variety and measure as we have been given, and we shall soon see improve- ment setting in and the end in sight. BOUNDLESS MORN PREVAILS How beautiful the eastern sky Is fringed with soft and lovely red; Beneath, the meads in prospect lie, With silvery dew like mist o'er- spread. The single star, that late to view Shone like a point amidst the sky, Is lost amidst the brightening blue, And boundless morn prevails on high: And oh! the clear enchanting sheen That skirts the east with beauty now, As if the Sun, himself unseen, Show'd to the world his saffron brow. --William Sidney Walker.
