WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, J LA U S. Positions Open to Wounded Soldiers Are Several Thousand Civil Jobs Now Open To Ex-soldiers Through -the service and informa- tion branch of the general staff it is announced that there are several thousand civil service positions under the war department now open for discharged soldiers partially disabled from wounds or diseases incurred in the war. For some months past Secretary of War Baker, acting in conjunction with the federal board for vocational training and the civil service com- mission, has been working on a plan whereby the war department might provide for the partially disabled soldiers under its own jurisdiction. This plan has now been worked out. Congress has already provided that in making appointments to clerical and other positions in the executive branch of the government preference shall be given to honorably dis- charged veterans and their widows or wives. This statute does not exempt applicants from the usual examina- tions under the civil service, but they will be required to attain an average percentage of only 65 in order to become eligible for appointment while others must make at least 70. Age limitations are also waived for veterans; they will be released from all height and weight requirements, except for the positions of guard and watchment; they will be certified for appointment in the war depart- ment at Washington without regard to the apportionment of appoint- ments among the states and terri- tories, and after passing the ne- cessary examination they will have their names placed on a register ahead of those not entitled to pre- ference. Simple Fact By H. F. C, There are thousands of honest, up- right people who get their living in Public Utilities, as well as thousands more who pay their wages in order that service may be rendered. And these very wage earners, al- though they are connected with pub- lic service, in fact, the Chicago Tele- phone company, are in reality, the absolute essence of the business. I hold no brief for any Utility. It is just a name--human beings make it .up. Red blooded American men and women make the telephone service possible and a girl who answers a ~subscriber's call is as worthy of hon- est treatment as any other girl in any business, doing any other kind of work A million dollars worth of telephone apparatus by itself is mere matter, but enthuse human interest in a happy bunch of men installing and keeping in repair all kinds of telephone equipment and then the thousands of energetic, intelligent, in- dustrious girls operating the lines for public good and need and, behold the bits of wire and metal live and have being. So that in order to encourage all those skilled operators and others to remain with the Telephone company and serve the public need, the Tele- phone company asks a moderate in- crease in rates to pay the help and pay those from whom it borrows money to run the industry. An increased rate is an absolute necessity to accomplish this result. BENBO-GAS, NEW AUTO FUEL, INCREASES MILEAGE A new motor car fuel has made its appearance in Kansas City, Mo. The composition is known as "benzo-gas." It is a combination of gasoline and benzol. The new "joy fluid" has been adopted by a taxicab company. It is said to increase the mileage of automobiles from 25 to 35 per cent. STATE OF ILLINOIS COUNTY OF COOK IN THE SUPERIOR COURT OF COOK COUNTY.
