SATURDAY, JULY 3, 1920 = Women In The Presidential Cam- paign A wise choice has been made in the "selection of the women who will serve on the republican campaign committee. Recognition of ability and influence in suffrage circles 'rather than of wealth or social po- sition is evident, a radical change of tactics from the campaign of 1916 which ought to be fruitful of good] results. Mrs. Harriet Taylor Upton, Ohio | suffragist, has been made vice chair- man of the committee, a tribute to ter influence with the women of her Round and Square By H. F.C. Business men of today pride them- selves on giving their patrons a square deal. There is a real principle at stake. . All sides are equal and each angle is equal to the other--and the four angles make a perfect circle. The Bell Telephone system en- circles the United States and the hundreds of thousands of people working in the system believe in giving the public a square deal. The telephone business has four sides to it. Subscribers, Rates, Serv- ice, and Help. Inside the square there are four angles. Stockholders, Bondholders, Dividends, and Loan interest, so that the telephone system is both round and square. Skilled help depends upon satis- fying wages. Service comes from efficient help. Subscribers make both possible. But without adequate rates, the square becomes lopsided and all fall together. Stockholders and bondholders look at the revenue from their angle. Dividends may or may not be--Un- certainty--loans are refused and so the angles get out of plumb. The telephone system today re- quires levelling up. It requires an adjustment in rates to make the workers and the service round and efficient, and be able to look the stockholders and the public, who loan it money, squarely in the face. The very uncertainty | §8 of the ratification of the Anthony amendment by the thirty-sixth state makes it essential that the women be B89 considered in the party conventions | fee as voters, no matter what the opini- on of the men who have the direction of policies in their hands. The fact stands out that there may be some- thing over twenty millions of votes cast by women in the fall election and must be considered in the pre- liminary days of the campaign. It was the thought of the woman's vote more than any other considera-| : ~ tion that kept the republican plat-| £3 form free from a plank urging the liberalizing of the Volstead enforce- ment act. It is the thought of the woman's vote that will probably keep a : cratic platform, that and the in- fluence of William Jennings Bryan, the man who refuses to be ignored "in the direction of the party policies. a ------------ Men of honor should endeavor only os to please the worthy, and the man of merit should desire to be tried ~ only by his peers.--Richard Steele.
