'WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JULY 10, 1920 mr ------ . ARDEN SHORE SEEKS ~~ CLOTHING FOR POOR Leaders of. Camp Opened July 1 with ; 500 Guests in Attendance, Issue ; Stirring Appeal for Contri- butions Arden Shore, the rest camp situat- ed at Lake Bluff where the women and children of the Chicago tene- ments are afforded a few weeks quiet and recreation and, at the same time, are taught some of the better meth- ods in the care of their homes and ~ families, opened on July 1 with an ~ attendance of over 500 for the first camp. * Arden Shore is supported by pub- lic subscription in the villages of the north shore. Winnetka always has been a leader among the towns in contributing to the success of this remarkable charity venture. In view of this fact readers of the Weekly Talk will be particularly in- terested in the accompanying appeal issued this week through these col- umns. "These are busy days at Arden Shore, Lake Bluff, where mother and children of the Chicago tenements 'are afforded a few weeks' rest and recreation each summer. The camp opened for the summer vacation work on July 1 with an attendance of 500 women and children who are all en- joying to the utmost their delightful vacation in this pleasant spot. Clothing For All Ages "Many of these people have but a scanty supply of clothing and are very grateful for the garments that are supplied by the people of the Pe shore from their store of old Clothing. Clothes for all ages from the smallest baby to the most wrink- led old grandmother are needed. Any number of shoes can be used and clothing for children between the ages of 5 and 12 is especially desired. Sweaters or coats are appreciated on the chilly mornings when anything from an old. fur to a pillow slip is used to wrap the children in until a hot breakfast and plenty of exercise - warms the blood. "Blankets are expensive these days and old ones can be used nicely to help out. Also ragged comforters can be made over into small ones for the babies' cribs. The little tots like to be wheeled around in baby carriages too, and the supply is never equal to the demand. There are never enough toys to go around when the weather is too bad to permit play outside. Need Sewing Machine "A sewing machine and chairs are needed for the beach sewing pavilion and bathing suits are always at a premium. "Has anyone an old stereopticon "he would be willing to give or lend to the camp? We have the offer of many beautiful slides, but no way to show them. On rainy evenings an entertainment of this kind is much appreciated. "Anyone having things to contri- bute is requested to call Miss Edna Lewis, 908 Central avenue, Wilmette, phone Wilmette 1208, and the articles will be called for. Hold Basket Picnic "One of the delightful basket pic- nics will be held at the camp on | Wednesday, July 14, at 12 o'clock. | Pack a basket and come up and see | Everybody ~ the camp in operation. is invited. Council members suggested that the question be taken up by the property owners affected by the pro- posed assessment and some plan formulated whereby all would be dealt with fairly and impartially. William S. Elliott headed the group of property owners who requested the withholding of the council con- firmation. It was their contention that, since their homes were already provided with water and sewer ar- rangements for which they had al- ready been assessed, it was unjust to request an assessment in the instance of the proposed new water and sewer work from which they were to derive no benefit, particularly in view of prevailing excessive costs. On the other hand property owners in the new sub-divisions feel they are justified in asking water and sewer arrangements for their homes. Those affected by the situation will be forced to await the public hearing in the courts. DEATH OF MRS. R. L. ALTON SEVERE SHOCK TO FRIENDS Funeral services for Blanche Day Alton, wife of Robert Leslie Alton, and leading Winnetka society matron of the younger set, were held Wed- nesday, July 7, at 2:30 o'clock at Christ church.
