SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1920 Suffrage A Fact Secretary of State Colby has sign- ed a proclamation of the Nineteenth amendment to the constitution. It appears that a group of suffrage workers from the headquarters of the National Woman's party who had gathered at the state department were disappointed, as they had hoped to be present when the secretary of state attached his signature to the proclamation. They keenly desired to make something of a ceremony out of the happy ending of a bitter fight. That they should want to hold a jubilation is a natural consequence. The women who have given so much of their energies and, indeed, lives that suffrage might be an accom- plished fact, can feel that it has been worth the effort and sacrifice. The average citizens, male and female, will be pleased to learn that suffrage is universal. It will mean an end of petitioning, pleading and picketing. It will mean that the women will take the position which is rightfully theirs and which should have been theirs for the mere ask- ing years ago. URGES A FOREST POLICY Importance of the forests to our economic life and the need of a na- tional forest policy are shown when we consider the wood-using indus- tries of the country and money in- volved, writes P. S. Ridsdale in the National Property Owner (N. Y.) In Ohio, Indiana and Illinois a billion board feet of lumber was produced by each state in 1899, but twenty years later this production had dropped to about one quarter of that amount. What this means in in- creased freight charges is easily seen. So alarming has become the situa- tion that the newspapers of the American Forestry Association of Washington and told the wood-using industries of the middle West they have to move or quit in thirty years. / carlin 7 00 1 SAAC OO INCORPORATED FOVNIAIN SQVARE- EVANSTON il ORE LEE SR Re |
