| | 4 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 11, 1920 SWIMMING MARVEL DEVELOPS AT NEW TRIER HIGH SCHOOL Jack Robertson, 15-year-old fresh- man at New Trier High school, is in line for a berth on the senior team this season, judging by his perform- ances in practice. His best stock in trade is in the relay and 40-yard swim. His ultimate success depends on diligent practice, hard work and strict adherence to the coach's rules. If he can take care of himself in the proper manner, show the real school spirit and develop into the real swim- mer that only abundant practice gan produce, he will undoubtedly prove one of the biggest stars of the year in the north shore tank. With the addition of the coming phenom New Trier will put a strong squad into the water in the forth- coming meets. The Central Y. M. C. A., composed of mature men who have been experts for years, will op- pose the New Trier senior team in a meet Friday evening at the Chicago- an's tank. Skelton, north shore star, and Kerr, captain of New Trier, will not appear in this meet. . Harrison Tech has been booked for Saturday evening, December 18, at New Trier. Both senior and ju- nior teams will compete. The Chi- cogoans are rated as one of the best outfits of natators in Chicago and with the possible exception of Lane cannot be defeated by any other city team at the present time. LOCAL GRIDIRON ELEVEN DEFEATS HIGHLAND PARK Winnetka's football team defeated Highland Park Sunday at the Win- netka Playfield grounds by a 20-0 score. All of the local scores were made in the first half, the visitors holding the Winnetka players safely in the second half. The players who starred for the visitors were France at right guard, Lichenring at left tackle, P. Blasius at right half, and W. Blasius at full. Arrangements are being made for a game for Sunday, but details were lacking at press time. The Winnetka line-up: he AR Se SE RE Spurbeck sie R.7T 1 - Ra Sh al tl R. G. Tn EE LN ERS Sn HE C. HH. Judge for yourself in the light of this evidence. On Wednesday evening while Hoff- man and Lance were busy at police headquarters, the business section of the village was suddenly consider- ably aroused by a very apparent fusilade of pistol shots from the vicinity of the W. & S. garage on West Railroad avenue, north of Central avenue. Hoffman and Lance darted out of headquarters with clubs and pistols drawn and raced to the scene of the shooting. A score of citizens follow- ed in their wake. Some one was towing in a disabled motor car in which sat a mechanic engrossed in thedelights of producing some realistic backfiring. There wasn't anything for the pat- rolmen to do but return to head- quarters. But, dear citizens, they were prepared for an emergency. More power to 'em. PUPILS OF ST. JOSEPH'S SELL CHRISTMAS SEALS Among those doing their share in the sale of Christmas seals are the pupils of St. Joseph's school who have been given stamps to the value of $100 to sell. The youngsters are working hard to duplicate their work of last year in which they earned a pennant. To date they have sold many seals and expect to exceed last season's sale. The Gross Point Health center, under the jurisdiction of the Chicago Tuberculosis institute, received di- rect benefit from the sale of the seals. SPEAKER AT K. C. MEETING Henry R. Rathbone of Kenilworth spoke at the December meeting of the Ouilmette Council No. 922 of the Knights of Columbus Wednesday evening. Mr. Rathbone outlined the work and aims of the Mississippi Valley association. Motor car racing in Europe is to be revived in 1921, when at least six important events on the continent and in England will be held during the season. The races of note will be the French grand prix, a 500-mile race on the Brookland track in Eng- land and a road race at La Mans, France. HIGHWAY CHIEF ANNOUNCES FIVE NEW ROADWAYS Springfield, Ill.--Frank I. Bennett, director of the state highways de- partment, has announced locations of five new roads to be built with money provided in the $60,000,000 bond issue approved by popular vote in 1918. Route No. 3 will be between East St. Louis and Chester and will through Waterloo, Dupo, Columbia, Red Bud, Evansville, Ruma and Ellis Grove. Route No. 3 from Jacksonville to East St. Louis will touch Murray- ville, Manchester, Roodhouse, White Hall, Carrollton, New Providence, Jerseyville, Alton, Delhi, Godfrey, and Granite City. Galesburg-Sheffield Route. The Galesburg-Sheffield route, No. 28, will go through Oneida, Altoona, Galva, Kewanee and Neponset. Route 24 will be from Springfield to Pana, touching Rochester, Taylor- ville, Berry, Breckenridge, Edinburg, Sharpsburg, Veima, Owaneco and Millersburg. Route No. 39 will be from Bloom- ington to Champaign through Har- ris, Downs, Leroy, Farmer City, Mansfield and Mahomet. The state highway commission will meet at Chicago next Monday to hear arguments for bond issue route No. 18 between Chicago and Prince- ton in Bureau county. The road will be 102 miles in length. The commission will meet at Dwight, Ill, December 7 for the pur- pose of selecting routes between Lacon, Marshall county, to Kanka- kee, a distance of 121-2 miles, and from Dana to Garfield in La Salle county, a distance of nine miles. Pennsylvania Beats Illinois. Pennsylvania won the race with Illinois in the number of miles of roads constructed this year, Mr. Bennett announces. Pennsylvania's completed roadwork for 1920 totaled 354 miles, while Illinois totaled 325. Mr. Bennett says 1920 was the ban- ner year for road construction work in Illinois. In 1919 only 250 miles were completed. Pennsylvania was the only state in the Union to pass Illinois this year in completed road work. Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Stixrud, 607 Wil- low street, have returned from a three week's stay in Jacksonville, Fla. The Scott Avenue Circle will meet with Mrs. C. T. Moon, 1386 Asbury avenue, on Tuesday, December 14, at 2:30 o'clock. 4 Miss Louisa May Greeley will re- turn from the East for the Christmas holidays.
