2 ( { | 4 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1020 17 SCHOOL PROBLEMS By Supt. Washburne Q. Aren't the requirements for writing in the Winnetka schools un- unnecessarily high? A. Public schools are criticised from two angles in the matter of teaching writing. One group of the public feels that the schools are not turning out children who will write both legibly and rapidly, and that more attention should be given to this subject. Another group points cut the large number of successful people who are poor penmen, and maintains that penmanship is a re- latively unimportant subject. We are trying to take the middle road in Winnetka in this matter. We are not demanding that all children write alike, nor that any special form of writing be adhered to, especially after the children reach the upper grades. On the other hand, we are insisting that children shall write legibly and rapidly and that each child's - writing shall be fairly uni- form with itself--that his small let- trs should all be approximately the same height and that all of his letters should have approximately the same slant. This height and slant need not correspond with those of another pupil The degree of uniformity, legibility, and speed which the child must attain | is not determined arbitrarily, but by a careful study of what children in corresponding grades do attain in most schools in various parts of the country. The difficulty which some of our children are having in reach- ing these grades is due to the fact that the penmanship of Winnetka children has been markedly inferior to that of the children in most other school systems Q. Isn't there danger of children becoming too nervous when they have speed tests in arithmetic? A. Speed and accuracy tests in arithmetic ar being given all over the United States. I have never heard of any serious results from them, nor have we experienced any. To be able to add and subtract accurately and quickly is a genuine demand in mod- ern business life. Our speed stand- ards in other processes of arithmetic are so low that they can very easily be attained. The tests are given very frequently and, consequently, do not have the exciting effect that an occa- sional test would. GO TO CHURCH EVERY SUNDAY LIKE FOREIGN TONGUE.
