es WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MARCH 25, 1922 9 e-------- -- -- JACKSON HAS KNACK OF MAKING TANKERS Coach at New Trier High School Achieves Enviable Record in 4 Years' Service BEST ALL-ROUND TEAMS Capture Cook County Cham- pionship 4 Years Straight When the swimming team at New Trier High school lost to Evanston's natators in Patten gym Monday of this week. thereby relinquishing the championship honors of the Suburban league, a notable record of achieve- ment came to a rather unfortunate close. With two of its foremost stars unable to compete in the decisive swim New Trier was virtually "out of the running" before the natators "hit the tank", Naturally this week's event sug- gests a bit of retrospection and ob- servation upon the past "Golden Era" superinduced by Coach Jackson. Starting with the New Trier squad in 1918 Coach Jackson proceeded to lead the boys to the I. A. C. Cook County championship in that year, as well as in 1919, 1920 and 1921. Far Outclass Opponents During the present season New: Trier "swam" 23 meets, securing a - total of 853 points to its opponents 422. During the past four years the school has won every league meet ex- cept the two captured by Evanston this season. New Trier was crippled in both of these meets. New Trier swimmers average young- er in age than most of their com- petitors in the Suburban league. The majority of the squads have been juniors in age. Promote Intra-Mural Contests Although New Trier manages to have a good team each year the begin- ners and mediocre swimmers of the school are not neglected. During the entire school year an organized swim- ming improvement scheme has been worked out for all the boy and girl swimmers and the annual Intra-Mural Gold Medal swimming tournament for boys who are not on the swimming squads. Ten teams of eleven swim- mers on a team held a series of 28 meets. The girls of the school have a similar tournament. This work, as well ag the coaching of three separate representative teams, must be con- ducted after school. New Trier, in- stead of giving the entire time, after school, to a group of eight or ten men, is promoting inter-school com- petition for three teams and teaching and promoting swimming for the en- tire student body. Prune Shrubs Now Ri LL ei. Proper pruning rejuvenates, improper pruning destroys. Have your pruning done now, before the growing season begins. All work is given careful, skilful and prompt attention. Fullness of foliage and profusion of blossom depends upon this important work and the time it is done. Phone Ev. 260 Following the Culver meet this year the head of the department of physi- cal education at the military school remarked that New Trier in every event, gave Culver the best race of any team they had met. Incidentally, Culver's swimmers average from two to three years older than New Trier's natators. In addition to his work in swim- ming instruction Coach Jackson also teaches gymnastics and calisthenics. Swell Scholarship Fund by Girls' Club Program An entertainment for the benefit of the Scholarship Fund of the Girls' club of New Trier Township High school is to be given under direction of the club Thursday, March 30, at 3.20 o'clock, in the school auditorium. Mrs. Jessie Royce Landis, leader in dramatics, appears on the program through the courtesy of the North Shore Players, with readings which will include cutting from "Smilin' Through," and several humorous se- lections. Mr. Landis is now doing Radio read- ing and is to be heard on the regular- ly scheduled Friday evening Radio programs.
