ed WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, APRIL 22, 1922 School "Housewarming" Today Winnetka citizens are invited to inspect the new Skokie school (shown above) this afternoon. Tomorrow, workers will canvass the homes of Win- netkans who have not yet been solicited to secure subscriptions to complete the sum necessary to meet the cost of the new structure. The goal of this final canvass is $42,000. PUBLIC FORUM To the Editor of the Forum: , The recent article in this column advocating more adequate street light- ing in the business section of Win- netka, is worthy of further comment. The idea is unquestionably sound. Street lighting of this nature has proven its' worth time and again in hundreds of American towns, not only from a strict business standpoint, but also from a standpoint of attractive- ness and orderliness in general. There should be no question as to the merit of the idea, the only concern should be how can such an ideal be attained? In considering the initial steps in this problem, it might be well to sug- gest, however, the possibility that the present sample lamp post is not all that might be desired from a stand- point of general attractiveness. Doubt- less it represents an efficient form of street lighting standard, but as an ob- ject of beauty in broad daylight, it is not all that could be desired. The Chi- cago Park Commissioners have been very successful with the lighting standards used in Grant Park just north of the Art Institute and this same design worked out after careful study of the best European and American standards has been used on South Michigan Avenue with good ef- fect. 'Why not, therefore, while consider- ing this question in the broad sense, give some attention to the type of fixture to be used? 'Why not seek the advice of Mr. Ben- nett, the designer of the village plan, for further suggestion and counsel to the end that the result may be not only an efficient one but a harmoni- ous and attractive one as well. S. 8. Otis. Editor, Winnetka Weekly Talk: I read with interest "Watch Dog's" article in last week's Talk about light- ing the business district of Winnetka and I highly approve, but your read- ers want to know more about the plan. For example, would property be assessed outside the business zone and, if so, what are the present limits of that zone? Perhaps Mr. Wcolhiser is better posted on such matters and he might break out in print next week. At any rate the question of lighting the business section is one of the crying needs of our village today. "Citizen." Blue Devil is quite different, From ',Cousins" of his kind. Just at this juncture in the world's and our country's affairs it is certainly one of the most useful contributions that people could possibly make to putting the world right. I have no more earnest hope than that the public may take this lesson to heart and learn to save." WARRREN G.
