6 . WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MAY 13, 1922 for self-expression, for presenting and fers every incentive possible to all of us to partake in forms of diversion which are helpful, physically, mental- ly, morally and even spiritually. If ther were more Community Houses in the country such as we have always had in Winnetka, I be- lieve honestly that there would be fewer causes of delinquency in chil- dren and adults as well. For at least ten years it has been a wonderful help and a real asset to the town and to the surrounding community. Today your membership is so large and your activities so great that an ad- dition to the building or else a limita- tion to the membership is absolutely imperative. The latter obviously would be a disgrace to your object, because to carry out the democratic ideals and aim of the people and the organizers and executives of Com- munity House, you must serve all as equal. Enlargement, then, is the solution and answer. The money expended for an addition could not be loaned or subscribed to a more worthy cause. It is a cause which is for everyone. Not only for the active members and prospective members, but for the com- munity as a whole--for the positive betterment of the community and communities which it serves." A New York "Graduate." | Am Community House. I am a cheerful, smiling octopus. I stand in the center Of the world's greatest suburb. With one long arm 1 gather little children. Another reaches out For young boys And girls. A third draws Women of all ages. A fourth brings in The Men, With them in my grasp 1 grant their requests. This group sings, Another dances. Movies, dramatics, athletics Find a place. I provide for meetings By the score; And I am happy Because 1 am The center of community life. But I wish I had More arms To take care Of more things And more people, Because I hate To disappoint anybody And I vant to sutinue to be A cheerful, smiling octopus. "No Place Like It." "When a man feels a little lonely or wishes to get acquainted with peo- ple, or when he has been out of sorts from his day's work, Community House is the answer; whether it is a little bit of pleasant conversation, dancing or to vent his energy on a game of volley ball or indoor, there is no place like it. I feel it helps to keep me in trim, both mentally and physically." H. W. Paulson Source of "Winnetka Spirit." Community House has lived up to all the air castles we painted as kids ten years ago. It has been our "gym," and if you tried to eliminate that building for one month there would be a noticeable effect on the general morale of the village. It is the source of Winnetka "spirit" that is so well known everywhere. Let's make it big enough to care for all. Stanley Clague, Jr. "The Very Heart of the Viliage" "As one who has been at Commu- nity House part of each day during ten years, I have seen, each day, men, women and children coming for com- panionship, for recreation, for help in all kinds of trouble and for many other reasons, and always they find something of benefit. It has seemed to me to be the very heart of the vil- lage." Mary Garretson. Wallace Reid Changed Artist in "Forever" Wallace Reid, who generally is vis- ualized behind the wheel of a long- nosed racing automobile, changed his conveyance, also his speed, in "For- ever," (George Fitzmaurice's Para- mount picture production, in which he is co-starring with Elsie Ferguson and which will be the feature at the Com- munity House, Friday, May 19. In their newest picture the two stars step from one conveyance into another, none as speedy or modern, however, as a roaring racer, for the story of "Forever" deals with a period antedating the advent of the gasoline craze, and permits of no means of lo- comotion that breathes through a car- buretor. Miss Ferguson and Mr. Reid had their first ride together in a horse- drawn victoria, a vehicle borrowed from the Vanderbilt collection in New York by the Paramount eastern stu- dios. Miss Ferguson next was drawn across the French street set in the studio in an ancient tallyho.
