Municipal Column FREE RUBBISH SERVICE The Public Works department of the Village, renders a free collection ser- vice for the routine removal of house- hold rubbish, calls being made on regular schedule, every two weeks throughout the year. The cost of this service is defrayed by general taxa- tion, the levy hLeing two-tenths of a mill per dollar of assessed valuation. This service is available to every resident of the Village, whether the householder is paying for garbage and ash collection service or not. The free rubbish service can only be given, however, in case the material for col- lection is restricted to household rub- bish, namely tin cans, bottles, broken crockery, discarded household equip- ment and similar rubbish. Material which can be burned, such as papers, old lumber, etc., cannot be taken nor is the income of the Village sufficient to extend the service to the collection of grass cuttings, broken concrete, brick bats, or any material from house remodeling jobs. The rules require that rubbish for collection be placed in containers which can be handled by the collector, outside the rear of the building at an accessible point. It is not necessary to place rubbish at the curb, except during "Clean-Up Week" in the spring. New residents may secure informa- tion as to the days for collection in their locality by calling the Village of- fices, Winnetka 860. Special calls, on request, will be made on Saturdays. Any irregularity in service should be taken up at once with the Village of- fices, where the matter will receive prompt attention. SHRUBBERY SHOULD BE TRIMMED The rainy weather during the past month has caused a rapid growth of shrubbery and many cases exist where branches of shrubs and trees extend over the public sidewalks of the Vil- lage and cause considerable inconven- ience to pedestrians, especially in wet weather. This condition has prompted the Village to send out a post card no- tice this week, requesting the co-opera- os LE I DAY and NIGHT SERVICE Automobile Washing Polishing EEE I 557 CHESTNUT ~ STREET Sw © Simonizing © PHONE -- Winnetka = 1446 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JUNE 3, 1922 m------------ tion of residents in observing the or- diance covering the trimming of shrubbery. RAILROAD REQUESTED TO RE- PAIR DRIVEWAY The deplorable condition of the west driveway of the Chicago and North- western railroad at the Elm street sta- tion has been called to the attention of railroad officials by ithe Village Council and it is expected that re- pairs will be authorized by the rail road in the near future. The Village authorities have been trying to secure a permanent base pavement here for some time, anticipating that the in- creased traffic of the Village would cause the condition now existing. Railroad officials have plead the ne- cessity for economy, however, with re- sulting inconvenience to the patrons of the road, using the Elm street sta- tion. The Village has offered to build up the driveway with a good macadam base and to surface with Tarvia, using the Public Works department organ- ization, at actual cost to the railroad, and it is anticipated that the proposi- tion will be accepted soon. VILLAGE STARTS PARKWAY MOWING The Public Works department has started cutting grass on street park- ways in front of vacant property. It is expected that all owners of im- proved property will keep their park- ways mowed as a matter of civic pride. f WINNETKA FRUIT STORE POULOPOS BROS. | Fresh.
