10 WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JUNE 10, 1922 COACH ROBINSON GIVES DO'S AND DON'T'S AROUND WATER N. U. Swimming Instructor Emphasizes Caution While Camping In the past fifteen years Coach Tom Robinson of Northwestern university has taught more than twenty thous- and persons to swim. Patience in any instructor is a virtue, according to the Coach. Kindness is expected. Bully- ing never gets you anywhere in teach- ing, the veteran tutor asserts. In the last twelve years Coach Rob- inson's teams hare won "Big Ten" con- ference championships and 36 dual meets out of }2. His teams have won more points in Conference meets than any other team. Water basket ball was invented by Coach Robinson in 1908 and adopted by the Conference schools in 191}. Robinson's teams have won three championships in this sport. His team won the American championship from Yale in 1913 and also has won four national coilcgiate 400 yard re- lay titles. BY TOM ROBINSON Northwestern university Swimming Coach In selecting a camp site try to find a place where the shore is sandy and the water shallow for at least 30 or 40 feet from shore. Place a life line out to where the water is about four feet deep. Build a pier out to where the water is at least seven feet for diving. Investigate the water to see that there are no stumps, rocks or brush within 20 feet of the driving platform. Have a life preserver hung on one post of the pier 30 or 40 feet of good strong line attached. When small children are in swim- ming keep a close watch at all times, especially if they cannot swim. It only takes a few seconds for them to disappear under the surface. If water is swift or rough, care should be taken to keep even adults from going beyond the life line. When boats are not in use they should be securely fastened and children should not be allowed to play in them; small chil- dren should not be allowed to play on piers unless they are good swimmers, or are attended bv an adult who can swim. Many chiidren are drowned each year by falling out of boats or off of piers. When rowing a boat or paddling a canoe do not pass in among swimmers as you may run them down.
