| A wo SES FRAREBA, © FS Np WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1922 17 Book Reviews By John Philip Morris Even in his own day Cellini, the man who did everything well, was a marvel and an exception and in these days of intense specialization there are few of us who can do more than one thing successfully. Today a poet confines his .pen to poems, although the definition of what a poem is has become something that would make Browning blush and drive Milton to suicide, and a writer must turn out only unmetrical prose and evén chamber drama is denied the playwright. The only respite from their daily toil, which is sometimes as tiresome as that of a shoe clerk, poet, playwright or proseur may ob- tain is to enter the field of criticism where it is anybody's battle and each hits whatsoever head sticketh up. What I am trying to say is that a book of short stories by a practicing poet is, therefore, in the nature of a freak and the fact that they are excep- tionally good short stories make their author all the more liable to Leaven- worth or Limbo for prespass. Aldous Huxley, who has been hither- to known as the author of one of the best long poems of this decade, a poem that is true poetry by all the recog- nized standards and yet, in spite of rhyme and meter, contains more than one idea. I refer, of course, to LEDA. Aldous Huxley presents us this season with MORTAL COILS. Anything that Mr. Huxley does is sure to be different and interesting and he has the knack of the feuillion as well as if he had never rhymed a stanza. About six months ago a gentleman in England was tried, condemned and executed for having poisoned his wife with arsenic taken from his own greenhouse. With the knowledge of this substratum of fact it is interest- ing to see the tale a master hand can mold. The result being the Gionconda Smile, the first story in MORTAL COILS. Another fine example of craftsman- ship and art comingled is the last story in the book, Nuns at Luncheon. Being a poet, Mr. Huxley's psychol- ogy is truer and deeper than that of most writers and the play of forces from without are too deep for common comprehension. I candidly admit that I did not understand Permutations. I feel that it has some unseen ground swell that was hidden by the light cresty foam of the word waves. However,( all in all the book is a notable addition to the literature of short stories and makes Huxley an English marine. Are You Tired! Our Cantilever Booklet Sent on Request As widely apart as are Africa and England, just so distant are Robert Hichen's far famed but now nearly forgotten GARDEN OF ALLAH and his new DECEMBER LOVE. This new novel is a hard, polished, sophis- ticated story of English society and contains not one kindly thought or lovable characteer. The plot is novel and interesting but the whole book is «cheap, one of those novels written solely for the shop girls of society and for those that love a Lord even in literature. Mr. Hichens began at the top of the ladder and , book by book, he has is nothing left for him to do but to accept the Chiltern Hundreds of liter- ature, start up again or else begin writing for the Cosmopolitan. John Phillip Morris Telephone Calumet 0424-5-6 the new Nokol Five years ago Nokol created a new industry --automatic oil heating for homes. Today 8,225 homes are Nokol equipped. Nokol has succeeded because of the enthusiasm of Nokol owners--because each new installa- tion has made new friends. The first Nokols installed are giving splendid service today and will continue to do so for years to come. And now--the new model. Five years ex- perience has gone into the perfection of this new machine. There is no change in basic design from the first Nokol produced. There is little change in appearance from the model of the past two years. But it is a refined Nokol. The new model is a development. Engineers could not better the principle, so the efforts of Nokol engineers have been turned to re- fining and simplifying the mechanism. The result is a machine positive in action, that sets up new standards of efficiency and en- ables us to give certain guarantees of |per- formance heretofore impossible with any home heating device--either coal or oil burning. The Orsat Test Guarantee The Orsat test, as any engineer will tell you, shows precisely the combustion efficiency of your heating plant--the number of heat units from each gallon of oil or pound of coal delivered as heat in your home or wasted in unburned gases through the chimney. Under laboratory conditions--where com- plete combustion takes place--the Orsat test shows that 15.6% of the flue gas is carbon dioxide. The average home heating plant will show an Orsat test of about 6% when burning coal--Iless than 50% efficiency. The New Nokol is guaranteed to show a mini- mum of 12% under the Orsat test in the same heating plant. This means that 85% of the heat units wi#.h the fuel is capable of yield- ing are released in the heating plant--a hitherto unheard of figure in home heating practice. We know of no other home heating device of any character that will show an efficiency anywhere near this figure. The Nokol Money Back Guarantee After your heating plant is examined by a Nokol heating engineer we will tell you just what you can expect of Nokol in your home. If Nokol does not perform exactly as we state we will take the machine out and refund your money. See the new Nokol in operation in our show rooms today. Let us show you the Orsat test --the one way to prove the efficiency of a heating device. It puts the purchase of an oil heating device on an absolutely scientific basis. Nokol can be installed in any type of home heating plant-- steam, hot water, vapor or hot air--without alterations. Nokol burns oil in your present heating plant and does away forever with the uncertainty, dirt and drudgery of coal heating. Nokol operates automatically--the temperature is perfectly controlled by a thermostat.
