James Austin Richards preached at the Winnetka Congregational church last Sunday morning. His theme was "The Prevailing Church," and he spoke of a number of characteristics such a church must have. "It must be loyal to its Master," he said, "Through all the historical changes of church government and church theology, nothing has been so important as the vividness with which the church has been aware of Jesus and the loyalty it has shown him. They are false prophets who would make the church so wide that it is shallow, or so broad that it is dull. Faith Should Be Prop "But with this central loyalty ot the church should go also the fearless and the open mind. The real believer is not the man who is always prop ping up his faith with arguments he would never think of using in any other connection, and always shield- ing his faith from questions ana criticisms to which all other truth is for annual affair and each year with keen anticipation. Instead of shielding his faith, he yearns to have it investigated ana put to every test. Church Must Grow Up "The prevailing church must also be fraternal and unified and worshipful, and aware of a great task. That task is nothing less than to change the mind of the world. The technical and mechanical skill of the world has greatly outrun its character. Our scale of values is all awry. As a philosophy, materialism is dead. As a way of living, its curse is on us still. Civilization is like a six-year- old boy driving a Rolls-Royce car along Michigan avenue at five o'clock on a week day afternoon. There is something in us that has got to grow up, or the prospect of our earth is something to make the ruddiest man turn pale. And what is this some- thing that must grow up, now almost smothered by wealth we do not know how to spend and powers that we do not know how to use? What is it if not the perception that men are more than things; that our communities of interest are as everything and our selfish interests are as nothing; that we are members one of another, not as a pretty sentiment, but as an ulti mate reality that will slay us if we do not make it bless us; and that over all is God, pitying, struggling, com- passionating, dying daily in it all? "The church is the one great institu- tion set to work this change in the mind of the world. Not to try it is to be prevailed against. To attempt it is to be a prevailing church, else God himself is beaten." DELEGATES TO DECATUR Wilmette and Winnetka furnished two of the sixty delegates going in the 'White Robin Special car over the Illi- nois Central to Decatur on Tuesday to attend the 49th Annual State con- vention of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union.
