Sugar Plum Tree of Story Book Land To Be At Petticoat Lane O more tempting array of sugar plums ever danced before children's eyes than those that are to hang from "The Sugar-Plum Tree" at the big four-college benefit, Petticoat Lane, which is to be hela at the Evanston Country Club on November 10 and 11. The real Sugar- Plum Tree of Eugene Field's poeni will be the first thing to burst on the sight at the entrance to the quaint English lane, and from the old apple woman who is to sit with her wares at the little green gate under the tree, to the ginger-bread dogs and chocolate cats in their queer antics, there will be nothing lacking to make the candy booth an entrancing bit ot story book land. Kate Greenaway girls from the popular book of nursery rhymes will offer delicious sweets concocted from old English receipts in addition to the best American candies. Two little venders, Mary Cock and Betty Kings- ley of Evanston. dressed in checked red, green and white to represent lollypops, will delight the children with their luscious wares, and tarle- tan animal bags filled with hard can- dies. Clever conceits in the way of dinner-card favors and nut baskets, and attractively decorated tin boxes for holiday use will please and tempt the buyer. The booth will be under the able chairmanship of Mrs. Ralph Renwick of Hubbard Woods and her assis- tants, Mesdames Davroe E. Getman. Paul Welch, Arthur Littlefield, James P. Fleming and Edward S. Main of Winnetka; Mrs. Sidney Ball of Kenil- worth; Mrs. Wm. D. Mann of High- land Park; and Mesdames Charles P. Davis, Alfred C. Tyler, Guy Scudder and Harry M. Ayres of Evanston. "Bon Voyage" Fete for Washburne Tour Party A combination party was given at the Skokie school Friday evening. It was a combination party because it combined a Hallowe'en celebration with a farewell party for Superin- tendent and Mrs. C. W. Washburne, Miss Mabel Vogel and Miss Florence Brett, who are leaving Monday, Oc- tober 30, for an extensive study of educational conditions in Europe. During the festivities a purse of gold was presented to the superin- tendent and his wife as a little re- membrance from their associates. After the games had been played and the dancing was over everybody turned to and enjoyed the cider, ap- ples and doughnuts that had been provided for the occasion. Quick Work of Firemen Saves Car From Flames The careles use of matches is said to have been the cause of a fire which damaged a Buick automobile last Saturday. The car was on Winnetka avenue west of the Indian Hill station when its owner, James Willett, Chicago, discovered the blaze and notified the Winnetka fire department. Immedi- ate action on the part of Chief Hou- ren"s men prevented extensive dam- age. L. B. Springer Endorsed by Anti-Saloon League Lewis B.
