Mrs. Gottlieb introduced the speaker of the afternoon, Mr. Paraknath Das, whose subject was "Educational Ten- dencies in Modern India." He says that statistics show India to be the lowest of all countries in the world in its criminals; that we can get nothing of the traditions of India with- out studying its folk-lore and stories entitled "Cradle Tales of Hinduism," by Mary Noble. He told short stories of ancient literature of India trying to portray to us their philosophy. His country is greatly indebted to us for our Missionaries, especially in the 19th century, but he says our methods, while very good are also harmful, as the missionaries try to change the natives completely. India has a defi- nite purpose to fulfill, and must not copy all from the West.
