WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1922 Wins Acclaim as Director ' MRS. JESSIE ROYCE LANDIS Winning popular favor as a dramatic artist, Mrs. Jessie Royce Landis has achieved new laurels as a director. The North Shore Players, after appearing four times in two weeks with their latest success, "Peg O' My Heart", and now in demand for a half dozen charity and kindred benefits, owe their immense popularity in the field of amateur dramatics largely to the splendid direction of Mrs. Landis. Beginning early in the autumn, Mrs. Landis devoted scores of evenings to the coaching of the Players. Her excellent instruction is reflected in the superb quality of acting to be found in the Peg O' My Heart production. The North Shore Players have appeared in benefit performances for the Winnetka American Legion, St. Luke's Auxiliary, Evanston, The Nation- al Kindergarten and Elementary college, and are now in demand for Peg 'O My Heart presentations in Highland Park and at the Aryan Grotto. youthful artists have scored a tremendous hit. The They receive no remunera- tion for their work, having pledged themselves to devote their dramatic talents to.the uplift of drama and to the encouragement of greater interest in the best that drama can offer. They are exponents of the "Little Theatre" movement, a term synonymous with the loftiest ideals of the stage. DLANES AMERICA FO FTE OF ARMENIA Episcopalians Told U. S. Neglects Duty One thousand members of Episco- pal churches from Evanston, north to Winnetka, shared with St. Luke's church, Evanston, the first Sunday of the new year at a mass meeting last Sunday evening, at which Bishop Charles Henry Brent, formerly chap- lain-in-chief of the A. E. F., and Bis- hop Charles P. Anderson of the Chi- cago diocese, spoke on the need of the church in the diocese and in the world. Bishop Brent severely indicted America for its lack of asuming res- ponibility in the Armenian situation. America originally, through her ac- credited representatives, he said, ask- ed that the mandate be given us, not France. A year and a half has gone by, he continued, and because of party politics, America did not go in to the League of Nations, neither did he accept the mandate which was to provide for the future of Armenia. America should not be acquitted from her promise, he declared. If she can provide nothing better, she must accept the League of Nations ag it is. The phrase "entangling alli- ance" has descended into "entangling avoidance" of which America is guil- ty, he pointed out. Bishop Anderson gave a significant talk on the need of the church in the diocese, and pointed out how north shore churches could support the various institutions sponsored by the church. Splendid music was played by the organist, Herbert E. Hyde, and the choir sang the anthem written by Mr. Hyde for the dedication of the new church organ. Approximately 1,000 persons attend- ed the mass meeting last evening, representing the four Episcopal churches of Evanston, and Wilmette, Kenilworth, and Winnetka. RESTAURANT FROCKS ARE LATEST WORD IN NEW PARISIAN STYLES Paris.--Restaurant frocks are the latest development of French co- utriers. They come for the most part with gay upper parts of lama or embroid- ered crepe, with sober skirts of the draped or straight variety attached to their low waistlines. They are modest and becoming for street wear, with a jacket, and yet striking and even gorgeous when the jacket is re- moved and the upper part alone ap- pears over the restaurant table. Francis is showing a charming model of this sort in soft black vel- vet, with a corsage of old rose and blue dentelle de laine, with tiny gold epaulettes. The same material forms the collar of the little box-jacket, which is embroidered in rose and blue to match the blouse. With the jacket it is a lovely street gown, with- i out it--a very chic restaurant frock. Another model is in black silk cash- mere, with a waist of gold brocade tissue imported from India and which is "guaranteed not to tarnish." A skirt and jacket of moleskin makes up still another, and with it goes a blouse of mole-colored crepe. Almond green pipings give a touch of color to the jacket and blouse. For the "uppers" of these frocks there is an endless variety of charm- ing materials--Chinese crepes, dec- orated with little scenes of seas and mountains; crepe du Maroc, alter- nated with large stripes of silver or gold; mousse-line de soie as delicate as cobwebs and lamas of shimmering | gold.
