LTGT7-1te Complete 10,000 Miles of Federal Aid Roads in Year Ten thousand miles of federal aid highways were completed in the fiscal year, bringing the total to 19,303, ac- cording to an announcement from the bureau of public roads. Texas, the largest state in the Unit- ed States, leads the list with 1,733 miles, while Minnesota is second with 1,416. Texas also is first in mileage under construction, with 1,408, and Nebraska second, with 970. Iowa, which is waking up to the fact that it needs good roads is third with 945 miles. Texas and New York received the largest allotments of federal aid, which is distributed on the basis of population and mileage of state high- ways. The bureau of public roads also has completed 1,352 miles of highways in the national forests, and there are 617 miles under construec- tion in these public lands. These roads will open to the public regions of great ratural beauty. More than thirty miles of bridges have been built under the federal aid highway program since 1916. One of the largest is that from Mandan to Bismarck in North Dakota. His more than three and a half miles in length and cost nearly $1,500,000. Falls Two Feet and Is Rendered Unconscious Phyllis Dally, small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman E. Dally, 1031 Oak street, was rendered unconscious one day early this week when she fell from the "monkey bars" at the Horace Mann school playgrounds. The fall was a distance of two feet and the child was quickly revived at the school medical station. 8 NEW CARDINALS BLESSED Rome.--Amidst ceremonies cen- turies old, the eighteen new cardinals on Monday received the papal bless- ing today at a public consistory at the Vatican. PES MY HEART PROVES WME North Shore Players to Be Congratulated By Glenn Bruce Judging from the appreciation of the audiences which met the perfor- mances, "Peg O' My Heart" last week at Winnetka and Evanston, the North Shore Players have the monopoly of a large place in the hearts of north shore drama lovers. The audiences were "all for " the production and from the very first act the players realized this and were encouraged tremendously. To present a play as familiar as this comedy of youth by J. Hartley Manners takes courage, but last week's actors un- der the efficient direction of Jessie Royce Landis did it so skillfully that the audiences soon knew it wasn't the plot, but the North Shore Players in- terpretations that so fascinated. Perhaps it was that Peg's Irish sim- plicity was refreshing; maybe, after all, it was just Elizabeth Duffy her- self. But, from the very moment that she made her first courtsey, the audi- ence in its entirety was nodding smiles of approval back. Miss Fanelma Schulmeyer was, throughout the play, an attractive and very interesting Ethel Chichester, W. Harlan Ware's portrayal of Alaric Chichester was unusually excellent character work, as was Earl Fox's in a minor role, the butler. The most convincing actor was Benn F. Cars- well as Mr. Brent, while Miss Neola Northum in her interpretation of Mrs. Chichester is to be commended for her consistency. Miss Klein and Giles Weise were satisfactory in less im- portant roles. Joe Driscoll was very pleasing as the hero, and the audience was thoroughly satisfied that Peg's future happiness was insured when he took her into his hands. The lighting effects were of superi- or grade. Especially successful was the storm presentation, The proceeds from the Winnetka performance went to the American Legion. BISHOP ANDERSON 13 SUNDAY CLUB SPEAKER A Capella Choir Gives Music Program Bishop Charles P. Anderson of the Chicago. Diocese of the Episcopal church, will be the speaker at the Wilmette Sunday Evening club, on the evening of December 17. Bishop Anderson is one of the best known clergymen in the United States and is particularly well known on the north shore where he appears fre. quently, both in connection with his diocesan duties and as a public speak- er. While Sunday evening's topic has not been announced, Bishop Anderson is certain to have a message of vital interest and importance to Sunday Evening club members and friends, Augmenting the address of the eve- ning will be a special program of music by the A Cappella Choir of Northwestern university, under direc- tion of Peter C. Lutkin. This splen- did musical organization is too well known on the north shore to require further comment. Sunday's program is certain to be one of the most valuable services of the 1922-23 Sunday Evening club sea- son and a large attendance is antici- pated by the officers of the club. Much Light is Lost by Using Unwashed Globes: A pan of soap-suds is one of the- most effective means yet discovered for increasing electric illumination. Electric lamps often get dirty, espe- cially in the kitchen, where there is grease and steam. Tests made recently disclosed that four classes of dirt often collect on electric light globes. They are dust and dry dirt, oily and greasy dirt, acid fumes deposits and spots of" paint, tar and varnish. : After the globes dave been washed' In soap and water their average light increase was shown to be as follows: Dust and dry dirt globes, 78.4 per cent. Oily dirt grease and acid fumes globes, 14% per cent. Paint, varnish and tar globes, 67.2 per cent. spatted
