WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, JANUARY 19, 1924 NEED $7,000 TO COMPLETE FUND Community House Govern- "ors Appeal to Winnetka in "Clean-up" Drive SHOW STATUS OF FUND "Open House" Is Scheduled for January 29 Encouraged by the enthusiastic action of guests at the opening dinner on Janu- ary 9 in pledging $16,000, the governors of Community House are seeking to raise the remainder of the building fund stortage amounting to about $7,000, by appeal this week to both former sub- scribers and others who have as yet made no contribution. The report of George D. Wold, treas- urer, read at the dinner, tells the story. It states: Treasurer's Report "As long ago as in 1918, the director of Community House informally brought to the attention of the Board of Gov- ernors, the increasing demand being made for additional room, and pointed out that it would only be a question of time until it would be necessary to substantially increase the available quarters if Community House was to continue to be in a position to render the same service it had in the past. It was recognized, however, that that was not an opportune time to bring the mat- ter before the public. "In 1920 the Board of Governors gave the matter detailed consideration and de- cided upon a general building program, the only question being when it should be submitted for public approval. About that time the school situation was de- veloping and it was recognized as more important to have additional school fa- cilities than to have additional facilities for Community House. Accordingly, our building program was laid aside until after the community had provided for the Skokie school. Enthusiastic Response "In May, 1922, a meeting was held at Community House and was attended by many of those present here tonight. Fhe proposed plans were presented and financing was decided upon. Subscrip- tions were sought from the entire com- munity, and the response, while not as great as had been hoped for in amount, was the greatest in number of sub- scriptions of any financial campaign ever presented to the village. The num- ber of subscriptions exceeded those of the Liberty Loan drives, the American Red Cross during the war, and the School drive, later on. They totaled 958 in number and in amount $68,-] 724.23. Of this amount we have collected $62,967.98. We are of the opinion that there will be some loss on the pledges, because of deaths, removals and financial reverses, which will amount to $2,500, making available $65,467.98 for the building fund. We have collected in- terest on bank balances and investments of the unused portion of this fund,' amounting to $920.65, which further in- creased the fund to $66,388.63. * Boal Contribution "Early in 1923, Mr. and Mrs. Ayres Boal, who had previously Subscribed to the fund, sought permission from the board to create a memorial to Mr. Boal's mother, Mrs. Henrietta Ayres Boal. This memorial took the form of a con- tribution, which, together with the pre- vious subscription made by them, was to cover the entire cost of the Boy Scouts' room, including the proportionate cost of the heating plant, hallways, electric wiring, architect's fees, etc. Accord- ingly, the Board of Governors an- nounces a total contribution from Mr. and Mrs. Ayres Boal of $7,500. This increased the building fund to $73;- 888.63. "The Building committee's report in- dicates that the cost of the completed building will be $96,464.84. This is $22,576.21 in excess of the available funds. GEORGE D. WOLF, Treasurer of Community House." The governors are grateful to the village tor the very wide-spread inter- est in the new addition, and anticipate a respcnse which will soon place it financially in the clear. A request for pledges for 1924 maintenance is being made at the same time. "The place where eating is a pleasure."
