WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1924 HLY'S HEAR BIG COACHES New Trier Boys Attend Big Jambouree A delegation of New Trier High school boys heard the Rev. Hugh Elmer Brown and Coaches Glenn Thistlethwait of Evanston, K. K. Rockne of Notre Dame, R. C. Zuppke of Illinois and Major John I. Griffith, director of the intercollegiate conference at the ninth annual Hi-Y jambouree at the Central Y. M. C. A, Chicago, Thursday evening, February 21. Five hundred high school boy leaders from sixty Hi-Y clubs in twenty-eight high schools in Evanston, Chicago, the north shore and other sub- urbs vied with each other in giving their school yells and songs and in cheering the speakers of the evening. "George Washington is a good hero for any red blooded high school boy today to follow," suggested Dr. H. E. Brown. "The world is looking today just as much as in Washington's time for young men of manliness in muscle, mind, and morals." Dr. Brown spoke on the subject: "If I Were in High School Again." "There is no place on earth where the true worth of a man is tested so thoroughly as on the athletic field," de- clared Coach Thistlethwait of North- western University. "Some students may be able for a time to bluff their instructors in the class room; some may be able to secure an honorable position by being able to deceive others; some may be able to elevate themselves socially and attain a certain popularity by pre- senting a bold front and an easy flow of talk. A good appearance, plenty of money have been known to give some the reputation as good fellows. "But, you can't stop a plunging half- back by bluffing him. You can't make the team by simply punching the clock and spending so much time on the field. Good looks will not make a successful forward pass or a mile runner . Plenty of spending money will not get you down on the kick and enable you to bring down the runner. The athlete, who makes good, is not afraid of hard work. He never even thinks of his work being hard. Neither does the honest man on the job. The athlete, who makes good, puts his whole heart and soul into his events; and so does the professional man who makes a name. If you do not have the stuff, you may be clever enough to bluff your coach for a time, but look out; for your oppenents will show you up. It is what you are inside that counts." Coach K. K. Rockne, who is a mem- ber of the boys work committee of the South Bend "Y" told the boys, "There's no place in football for the cream puff fellow or the bully. The Hi-Y club demands fellows who are not lopsided but strong all round men." Major J. L. Griffith urged upon the boys the fact that colleges were not paying high school athletes to enter their colleges, in spite of common talk to the contrary. "The colleges were all agreed," said he, "that it is not good sportsmanship." HEAR, BUY MUSIC BY PHONE, LATEST STUNT "Hello, (on the phone) is this the Winnetka Brunswick Shop?" "Yes, ma'am," "Have you some nice fresh records this morning?" "Most assuredly. tc hear some?" "If you please." "Just a moment." Then Walter "Wallie" Dehmlow, the genial proprietor put on the fav- orite dance selection while the pro- spective customer "listened in." : "And, how about some sheet music?" hc inquired a bit later. "I'd love to hear some." Business of "Wallie" at the clavi- cord demonstrating the latest in popular song and dance numbers. The customer again listening in. Buying records and sheet music by phone is not only possible but en- tirely feasible, nowadays. The method was given a thorough test at the Winnetka Brunswick Shop the other day and proved quite [satisfactory: No static or "WJAZ-KWY" to tune- out either.
