WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 1924 CLAVILUX IS WONDER ORGAN Recital at Winnetka Shows Possibilities of Light as a Fine Art APPEAL TO THE EYE Audience Amazed at Wilfred Performance Recently in Jane Kuppenheimer Me- morial hall, Winnetka, Thomas Wil- fred gave a "light recital" of his own compositions. In his introductory re- marks Mr. Wilfred explained the New Art of Light, outlining past attempts, present developments, and future pos- sibilities of Light as a fine art. In the art of music, said Mr. Wil- fred, we have a well-developed art which appeals to the ear. In the art of light we have a very new art which makes appeals to the eye. Just as there are musical compositions which with melody, harmony, and rhythm express the feelings and thoughts of the composer so there are already light compositions, the work of Mr. Wilfred, which with colors and forms, moving more or less rhythm- ically, express the feelings and thoughts of Mr. Wilfred, who is the sole composer in this new field. This new art's instrument, the clavilux, is merely a complicated ar- rangement of lights, colored plates. and keyboard; the purpose of the machine being to permit the plaver to control and project on a screen the infinite combinations of the seven col- ors of the rainbow. Let's see one clavilux number. It is Opus 8 by Wilfred played by the com- poser. We see first the solo, or central pattern, a single form appearing at the bottom of the screen and thence slowly rising and rotating to disappear at the top. The "key" of this solo is Green, White, and Orange, meaning that this form consists of these three colors mingled in many proportions. The accompaniment to this solo is a double form, two forms, one appear- ing on each side of the solo. 'These secondary forms advance, recede; and rotate and their "key" is Green, Blue, and White. It is very much like a moving picture except that the only human element in the clavilux pro- jection is the idea of the composer. Then, too, the new art is kaleidoscopic in nature but the combinations made by means of the clavilux are inten- tional, not merely chance. Words cannot describe these colors and forms, rising, descending, rotat- ing, mingling, advancing, retreating on the screen. Comparisons of these pic- tures with flowers, volcanoes, angels, etc., are misleading, because it is the composer's idea to prevent ideas, not concrete forms.
