Henry Welton of Evanston, well known in Chicago and on the north shore for his exceptionally fine tenor voice, will appear in a theatre, with little Viola concert program on Saturday morning, March 15, at the Studebaker Mitchell, the twelve-year-old Pittsburgh violinist, in a bene- fit for the Building fund of the National Kindergarten and Elementary college. Mr. Welton, a junior in the music school of Northwestern, won the vocal contest held re- cently by the Society of Ameri- can Musicians, and with it the honor of appearing as soloist with the Chicago Symphony in one of the season's popular con- certs. The Music World (Chi- cago) says, "Mr. Welton has a real lyric tenor--a real one, with no apologies--and his work was of a smooth, finished order, most satisfactory to listen to." He sings with exquisite tone quality and interpretation, and his diction is excellent. He has studied with Theodore Harrison and Herman DeVries, and is at present studying under the direc- tion of Walter Stultz. Viola Mitchell, Mr. Welton's concert partner, has been hailed | as a wonder-child and prodigy by Leopold Auer, Albert Spald- ing, Daniel Mayer and other master musicians of the east. She has recently become the proud possessor of a very wonderful Guarnerius violin, the work of Joseph Guarnerius whose violins took first rank among many celebrated ones made by the family of Guarneri J. Henry Welton at Cremona in the year 1710, and she will use this violin for the concert. Its tone is very distinctive, with a wonderful carrying quality, exceptionally de- sirable for solo work. Among the North Shore sponsors of the concert are: Mr. and Mrs. Merritt Starr, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Langworthy, Mr. and Mrs. William Suther- land, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew MacLeish and Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Smith. The Friends of the Chicago Junior school gave a dance Friday evening at the Sovereign hotel. An attractive program was arranged for this occas- ion which was a large social function. The Children's Ballet, under the direc- tion of Miss Morgan, a special feature by the Duncan sisters, and Stanley Price, Joseph Greenwald, and G. W. Sharpe of the "Abie's Irish Rose" company, delighted the guests. After the dance Mrs, Elwood Ankrum was a dinner hostess to one hundred per- sons. The hosts and hostesses assist- ing that evening were the members of the North Shore branch. Mrs. Edgar Foster Alden and Mrs. A. W.
