Three years ago, 'in. 1921, -a .similar affair was given for charity, and proved a great success, with a daily attendance of 6,000 and a net profit of $24,000. This year there are elaborate plans under way to make this affair even more of a success than the last one, and both the Evanston and Winnetka women interested are enthusiastically cooperating in this undertaking and are putting forth every effort for this purpose. The work will be entirely divided among the several committees, of which there will be an Evanston and Winnetka co-chairman for each committee. The Executive Committee in charge is composed of Mrs. Rollin W. Keyes, Mrs. Daniel H. Burnham, Jr.,, and Mrs. Donald Dallas. - Interesting Exhibits It is planned to have many at- tractive and interesting exhibits from the different shops in Evanston and from those firms who are advertising nationally. Though the Evanston and Winnetka WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, APRIL, 12, 1924 4 Northwestern Settlement serves about 8,000 people all told, who are crowded into one square mile in the northwestern section of Chicago, and in this neighborhood there are ap- proximately 12,000 boys and girls over nine years of age and about 25,000 children under nine years of age. About 30,000 little children are brought to the doors of the Settlement for assistance every month, and 11,000 people pass through the doors of the Settlement each month. In this neigh- borhood the Settlement is the outstand- ing influence in the life of the com- munity. There is an Infant Welfare station there, pre-natal clinics, and classes in cooking, sewing, citizenship, dramatics, ets., for the children. It also serves as a civic center, having a branch post office, and it is the meet- ing place for all the civic and social clubs in the neighborhood. As a real source of education in American ideals and standards of service, the work carried on by Miss Vittum and her helpers is invaluable. They are the advance guard in the struggle for an enlightened Christian civilization. The cause is urgent and the need is great, and it is hoped that it will meet with a hearty support from the public. Fine Old Name of Brown Secures Another Recruit The Brown clan is celebrating these days, and it's all about the arrival on Thursday night, April 10, of one E. Burt Brown, 111, who hopped on the scales for all of 7 pounds and three- quarters ounces. E. Burt the Third is the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. Burt "Ned" Brown, II, of the Arlington Apartments, Chicago, the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. E. Burt Brown of 618 Willow street, and nephew of the well known Tom Brown, the realtor. That's about all we can say about the distinguished young gentleman at this time. He refused to be inter- viewed. Is was said he will become a citizen of Winnetka. The play, based on the story of the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus, is filled with a spirit of loyal- ty to Christianity. The late Roman background, the persecution of early Christians, the unswerving loyalty which finally wins wondering believers to the new faith, is an inspiring story for Faster time. The children have studied the life and customs of the age with great care in presenting this play, even to learning ancient chants and hymns to go with it. In one act is a Max Reinhart effect, the whole audience being the mob, from among which some of the actors single themselves to run up to the stage. The Eighth grade mothers helped with the costumes, while the fathers helped with the scenery. Mr. Everett Smith was in charge. It's a Winner!
