JOSEPH J. SIDDALL (President, Arden Shore Board) As each year brings new residents to the north shore villages and as all are asked to contribute, in May, to the great north shore charity, Arden Shore Camp, a short sketch of its history and the work carried on is here given. The camp was first established in 1901 as an adjunct to Gad's Hill Settlement in Chicago. It was located between Glencoe and Highland Park, on land loaned for the purpose, and was called Gad's Hill Camp. In 1908 when this land was no long- er available the present site, a beauti- ful tract of 22 acres of forest land, was purchased and the name was changed to Arden Shore. It is on a high bluff over- looking Lake Michigan about a mile north of Lake Bluff. Its natural advantages are unsurpass- ed, affording as it does the shade of lofty trees, the cool breezes of the lake and the delight of bathing in its clear waters to thousands of mothers and /lit- tle children who, at home, smother in the city's heat and dust and have no playground but its crowded streets. Have Permanent Buildings Many beautiful permanent buildings are on the grounds and are continually being added to as the old, worn out tents are replaced by cottages, most of them donated either by individuals, as mem- orials, or by villages or groups interest- ed in the work of the camp. Arden Shore is supported by contri- butions from its many friends chiefly those resident on the north shore. This year the camp needs a somewhat larger sum than heretofore to take care of the new equipment made necessary by the growth of the work, and to meet the ever increasing cost of labor. It has been estimated by a reliable au- thority that Arden Shore is doing 23 per cent of the free camp work among 35 camps around Chicago that have been in- vestigated. * This is the highest percent- age of any, the next being 17 per cent. Surely this is a record of which the North Shore may well be proud. Real "Camp Mother" The object of the camp at first was simply to provide summer vacations for some of the needy poor of Chicago's congested districts. In the beginning its capacity was 30 guests and all the work was done by volunteers. Now 500 hap- py mothers and children, at one time, find place on its spacious grounds and during the summer about 2200 guests are entertained. Long ago it was found im- possible to depend upon volunteer help alone, although it is very welcome when offered, and a regular staff of trained workers carries on both summer and winter under the wise and gracious leadership of the superintendent, Miss Anna Belle Ferrier, who is best des- cribed as the well beloved "Camp Moth- er. As the camp has grown in capacity it has also developed along lines of great- er usefulness so that it is no longer merely a vacation camp but does a large share of real constructive charity work. Mothers who have grown old and stoop- ed before their time not only renew their youth in the joyous life of Arden Shore but at the same time are taught the value of cleanliness, good wholesome food for growing children and the art of making over for their families the clothing so generously sent in by many friends. Babies are given the intelligent care they need to start them on the road to healthy, happy childhood and little con- valescent children from the Chicago hospitals have a chance to grow strong and rosy before returning to their homes. Aid Undernourished Children A large part of the work of Arden Shore 1s now devoted to undernourished children, girls in summer and boys in winter. These are the children between 14 and 16 who are being forced into industry by the needs of their families but who are physically unfit to enter the industrial world. Arden Shore gives to. them the blessing of health and a fair chance to achieve independence. In many cases it is possible to persuade the parents to allow the boys and girls to return to school. Where this fails every effort is made to find employment for them that will be suited to their age and strength. The Arden Shore association is trying by means of Big Brothers and Big Sis- ters, clubs for boys and girls and in other ways to follow up these young people after they leave the camp so that the lessons of health and good citi- zenship learned may be of permanent value. The Board of Directors hopes that the work of .the camp may seem worthy of the continued generous support that has been given in the past and urges all who are interested to visit this beauti- ful place and see for themselves what a large dividend in health and happiness comes from an investment in Arden , Shore. U. S. Issues Call For Many Junior Engineers The United States Civil Service Commission states that on May 7, it will hold throughout the country ex- aminations for junior engineering positions in various branches of the civil service. The examinations em- brace most of the leading specialties in the field of engineering. The magnitude of the engineering work of the Government is indicated by the fact that it employs approximate- ly 2,000 civil engineers alone. All told, the Federal Government employs in civil positions in the neighborhood of 8,000 engineers of various kinds. Each year, hundreds of recent grad- uates are appointed. The Commission states that the Water Resources Branch of the Geo- logical Survey will appoint 50 junior hydraulic engineers, and the Bureau of Public Roads will apoint 20 junior highway engineers. Most branches of the Government service employ at least a few engineers of some kind. Full information and application blanks may be obtained from the United States Civil Service Commis- sion, Washington, D. C., or the secre- tary of the local board of civil-service examiners at the post office or cus- tomhouse in any city. Motor Club Will Send Special Train to Races A special delegation from the Chi- cago Motor club will go to the races at Indianapolis this year. The club has arranged for two spe- cial trains, which will leave over the Big Four the 29th, and will be back in Chicago about 10 P. M. on the 30th. Members may secure tickets and transportation at the club house.
