Why WINNETKA WEEKLY TALK, SATURDAY, APRIL 26, 1924 = 3 THIS CHAP BUYS A WHOLE ISLAND Charles A. Kinney of Adven- ture Isle Fame, Buys Big Strawberry IS NEAR GREEN BAY Plans to Establish a Boys' Camp There Since the days of Robinson Crusoe and Swiss Family Robinson, every boy has had dreams of some day own- ing an island. To at least one Win- netkan has this boyhood dream come true. During the past week Charles A. Kinney, director of Adventure Is- land Boys Camp, secured title to Big Strawberry, one of the largest islands in Green Bay. The island, which is heavily wooded "and wild, is 'about a mile and a half in circumference, and lies two miles from Fish Creek and a short distance off shore from the Pen- insula state park and forest preserve. It was inhabited by the Indians many years ago, but during the past thirty vears has been visited only by camp- ers. Will Establish Camp Mr. Kinney plans to ultimately es- tablish a camp for boys on the island. Its location makes it ideal for such a purpose since it is ample in size, close to unlimited supplies, is but a few moments from a State park of nearly 4.000 acres of wild timbered land, with eight or nine miles of shoreline, and has the privacy which only an island can provide. The region in which the island is located is considered the most beautiful and picturesque section of Wisconsin. . Adventure Island Camp, which is located a short distance from Big Strawberry island will be continued in its present location for the next two or three years, during which time the new camp will be very carefully plan- ned. Throughout the summer the boys will make frequent trips to the new island, and they will have a large share in the planning of the new camp. One of their first activities will be to make an accurate' survey of the island, plan a harbor, locate piers, lay out an athletic field, and help plan the main log buildings. Has Valuable Associates Associated with Mr. Kinney in Ad- venture Island Camp are "Bob" Town- ley, scoutmaster and director of Boys' Work at Kenilworth, Deyo S. Leland, scoutmaster and head of the Physical Education department of the John Burroughs school, St. Louis, Robert Lakemacher of the Francis W. Parker school, with "Tony" Humphreys as part-time councilor in charge of camp dramatics. During the present summer one of Mr. Kinney's scoutmaster assistants will organize a special five weeks' camp on Big Strawberry island for a small group of boys of scout age. The camp fee for this group will be placed at a figure that will bring it within the reach of almost any Boy Scout. The boys will be provided from the main camp with a cook, camping equipment, boats, and with every facility for making the summer a happy and successful experience. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest H. Hicks, of the Ambassador hotel, formerly eof Hinsdale, are planning to spend four summer months in Winnetka. -- Mrs. Ralph K. Country Day Presents "Pirates of Penzance" North Shore Country Day school girls and boys are presenting Gilbert and Sullivan's "Pirates of Penzance" this week in the gymnasium, the first performance on Friday evening, April 25, at 8 o'clock, and the second on Sat- urday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. As nearly everyone in the high school is in the opera, a large number of par- ents and friends are 'expected; and as the opera itself is a popular one, rarely seen, many others will probably be on hand. The solo and chorus parts have been trained by Miss Nina Babcock, head of the Music department, the acting by Perry Dunlap Smith, headmaster, while the scenery has been painted by the children themselves under the direction of Mr. Knott of Hull House. It is North Shore's entrance into the realm of opera production and a delight- ful performance is expected. The! Polly Prim Shop... (MRS. NOE) Smart and simple dresses for children.
